Conservatoire

The Conservatoire trains musicians to harness the magic within Kaitstud. They also employ all those they have trained across the lands in order to provide magical services to those who need it. Their base is the Conservatoire lands at the base of the Cragspire Mountains.

The Leading Council

The Grand Master is in charge. They are chosen from the rest of the Esteemed Masters and Lead Instrumentalists, and is a permanent post.
Lead Instrumentalists - heads of each of the four instrumental sections (Brass, Woodwind, Strings, Tuned Percussion) - and the Lead Conductor - head of the conductors - run each of their sections. They decide when people are promoted up a level within their section. These roles rotate round the Esteemed Masters within each section, each serving for seven summers before standing down.
Together the five leads and the Grand Master form the Leading Council who run the Conservatoire itself and ensure that there is a balance of Conservatoire members across all the different courts and roles. They

Promotion within the Conservatoire

Students

Anyone can come to the Conservatoire to be tested after eight summers. If they are found to be talented and able to control the magic through music then they become a student. All students are resident at the Conservatoire Hall where they study all music forms and roles. This takes five years and is usually completed by their twelfth summer.

Trainees

Trainees choose a section to specialise in. Either brass, woodwind, strings, tuned percussion, or conducting. Conducting is the most prestigious, but it requires a lot more study as you need to learn more of the other instruments too in order to be understand how to get the best from them.
On average it takes five summers to be considered sufficiently skilled enough to walk the tables and become a Sectional, but it varies depending on aptitude.

Sectionals

Sectionals go out of the Conservatoire to learn on the job how music is used across the rest of the alnds. They travel with a Master and experience a range of the different roles and places. It takes on average 3 summers to be passed as qualified. At this point they can choose to return to their home town and work as a Master, or they can return to the Conservatoire and train further to become an Esteemed Master.

Masters

Masters are fully trained, initiated and loyal to the Conservatoire. They go out and do the work of magic in the land. This is the level with the most number of members. Some of them are actively working to be promoted when there is a vacancy in the Esteemed Masters, but many of them want to stay where they are and serve the communities they came from.

Esteemed Master

Each of the five sections has a group of Esteemed Masters that together with the Lead run the section. Esteemed Masters are mostly based in the Conservatoire, though often there is one or more with each Court.
In order to become an Esteemed Master you have to have a certain number of years experience across different roles within the land. There are a limited number of Esteemed Masters, and when one dies/retires then nominations are put forward for their replacement. They look for the best and most loyal Masters to promote, those that have done well across the different lands in raising the profile of the Conservatoire.
