Lorkin (Loor-Ken)
The Fable:
The legend of the Lorkin has been passed from mother to scared child for hundreds of years: creatures that haunt your villages and homes, who hunt bad little boys and girls and eat the ones who do not do as they're told.
Because of this, Lorkin are often depicted as vile monsters who steal children and eat the hearts of their enemies. This cruel monster helps keep children obedient and parents in control, but it also creates a sort of superstition and fanaticism surrounding them in many cultures as the children grow up and become fearful of them as adults.
Fables of great mystical creatures fill the pages of prophets and poets alike, giving a hero something fantastical to fight against or, on occasion, fight for. However, these tales just that and often stories of those who claim to have seen beasts of this kind are either quickly dismissed as words of madmen or heralded as an omen of death and destruction and there is rarely a middle ground.
The Fact:
"Lorkin" is a broad (and sometimes considered racist) term for a collection of many fantastical races held together by common cause, common foe, and the ability to keep their identity a secret. The group of races are normally harmless unless provoked and just want to live their lives peacefully.
In the days of the Old Kaldran Empire, All Lorkin had their spot on the Council of the Empire, which encompassed Lorkin and Vizar alike. For centuries they were respected and befriended by all, but that would not last long.
When the Old Vizar Empire fell, the Lorkin, who were closely allied with the Vizar, were hunted and killed just because they were different from the Humans. Throughout the centuries not much changed: Lorkin have been oppressed and hunted, no race of them spared, chased to the ends of Kaldra. Because of this, they hide in plain sight, masquerading as humans. After some time, many races of Lorkin were finally granted a respite.
Depending on the race, Lorkin use their talents in recent times to keep themselves hidden from the cultures of Kaldra for fear of being hunted once again. They can be anyone as the one talent all Lorkin possess regardless of their race is the ability to appear human until they're stressed or angered. Most of them are good at keeping very calm because of this, but not all. Fortunately for the races of Lorkin, being seen rarely changes anything - although many of them have gotten very good at drifting from place to place.
