Lanarish language

Modern Lanarians all speak Lanarish as their primary language.   Centuries ago, Lanarish began as a low or common dialect of the Melzeen language. As time passed, it developed into its own tongue.   Nobility continued to speak Melzeen long after it and Lanarish were no longer mutually intelligible. As advances in technology, exploration, and commerce put more power in the hands of commoners, it became necessary for nobility to learn and use Lanarish to stay relevant and communicate with the most influential people of the age.   The languages spoken by the colonies before Melsar's conquest are all but extinct, surviving only in academic settings. These dead languages continue to have a strong influence on regional dialects, however.

Phonology

The "zee," "vee" and "kuh" sounds occur often in Lanarish, hearkening back to the buzzing, clicking noises made by Kavrillians' amphibious ancestors in the primordial swamps.

Common Female Names
A woman gives her formal name as Jhea'[mother's name]ani [given name]. For example, Vazali is Vizada's daughter, so she is Jhea'Vizadani Vazali. (If the mother's name ends in A, the extra A is omitted from the "-ani" suffix.)   If a woman is married, she adds "Klai'[spouse's name]ani" between these two components. If she has children, the marker "Um" (pronounced "oom") is put before her given name.   For example, Vazali's sister, Kazaneta, is married to a man named Ravikar, and has children. Thus she is known formally as Her Majesty Princess Jhea'Vizadani Klai'Ravikarani Um Kazaneta.
Common Male Names
Formal male names are constructed under the same rules as the female ones, substituting "Gea'[father's name]ani Nai'[spouse's name]ani Um [given name.]   For example, Vazali's father is Gea'Xeebonani Nai'Vizadani Um Xeres (son of Xeebon, husband of Vizada, father, Xeres.)
Common Unisex Names
Nonbinary individuals can drop the gender-specific letters from the prefixes and give their names as Ea'[parent's name]ani Ai'[spouse's name]ani [given name].
