Tarloth
A reptilian humanoid species, tarloths are typically characterized by their bulky builds and bristly feathers. Their largely non-human appearance has led some to consider them a standalone reptilian species, but genetic research suggests that tarloths are, in fact, descended from humans.
Like many humanoids, tarloths are an intelligent species, and can be Vita-Touched (as of the Second Age, at least). They are a moderately common sight in the galaxy, their reptilian appearances often making them stand out among other humanoids. Despite this, they tend to be well-accepted in the galaxy, though they are often regarded as brutish due to their intimidating appearance.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Tarloths are a humanoid species and their base anatomy matches that of other humanoids. They are bipedal, with two legs and two arms, and their internal structure (skeletal and muscular) shares much similarities with humans. They are very bulky, however, and slightly taller than the average human. Their bodies are scaled, broken up with tufts of bristly feathers (similar to a cassowary's) on the head, body, and arms.
Their heads are distinctly non-human, with a short but powerful hooked beak, leading into a horn-like casque on top of the head. Tarloths have powerful jaws and a devastating bite, although it tends to be a last resort--they are more likely to kick out as an attack.
Tarloths have big and heavily scaled arms, with large claws, though they are more likely to use them to guard or grab than as a direct attack. Their legs, on the other hand, are thick and powerfully muscled, covered in bird-like scutes. Most claws on their feet are duller than those on their hands, but their innermost toe has an exceptionally long dagger-like claw. Most tarloths cover these claws up with sheaths, or are even required to have them dulled, but even without them, they can deliver a devastating sort of kick.
Outside of their offensive capabilities, and the overall protection offered by their scales, tarloths have an additional defensive measure. Their backs are covered in large scutes, akin to those of a crocodile or even some armored dinosaurs. These spiked plates make attacks from the back almost impossible, though they tend to flatten out as the tarloth ages. They do not have tails.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Tarloths are naturally omnivores, like many humanoids. Unlike many other humanoids, however, tarloths are actually omnivorous, eating a highly varied diet. They (typically) have sturdy dietary systems, and a fittingly opportunistic diet.
Civilization and Culture
Interspecies Relations and Assumptions
Though often seen as brutish due to their bulky builds and claws, tarloths are fairly well accepted in galactic society. They are strong and sturdy, making them valuable for physical work, and easy to feed. Their intimidating appearances and natural armor (and weaponry) also makes them a popular choice for bodyguards and mercenaries, although there are plenty of tarloths living peaceful lives, too, working as builders, mechanics, or even farmers.
