Alexander I
Tsar Alexander I
Alexander Alexandrovich was the son of Alexander Nicholaivich. Originally second in line for the throne after his father, he was barred from succession after the death of his grandfather and the elder Alexander being accused of regicide and patricide. He joined his father and siblings in exile in Kiev.
Upon the death of his father, Alexander exerted his claim to the Russian throne. He declared his uncle, Constantine I, illegitimate and his reforms as Russophobic. He negotiated an alliance with Austria and led a conservative rebellion against his uncle and cousins. The war ended in stalemate, but Ukraine was subsequently recognized as independent, with Alexander being proclaimed Tsar. During his reign, he oversaw a military buildup and arms race that continued until his death. He was succeeded by his son, Nicholas I.
Through his wife, Maria Feodorovna, he was able to gain favor with his brother-in-law, King Edward VII of Britain. Furthermore, she was able to coerce animosity towards the Germans, with a particular distaste for the ambitious and egotistical Kaiser Wilhelm II.
