Nicholas I of Ukraine
Tsar Nicholas
Nicholas I was Tsar of Ukraine and the son of Alexander I. Upon ascending to the throne of Ukraine, he continued the hostilities towards Russia and against his uncle, Tsar Constantine II.
Nicholas sided with Austria-Hungary and Bulgaria in the hostilities against Serbia in order to curb the extent of Russia. However, these actions directly led to the The Great War. During the war, his son, Alexei, died from complications from haemophilia, leaving him without an heir.
As the people of Ukraine greatly opposed the war from the start, they began to raise hostilities against the nobility. Nicholas attempted to quell these insurections with harsh punishments. These did nothing to help the situation, and Nicholas was forced to resign as Tsar in favor of his brother, Michael. He was appalled as Michael ended the war and signed over the Ukrainian monarchy back to Russia under his second cousin, Ivan VII.
Nicholas took his family into greater exile in Siberia. Ivan approved the exile in favor of execution as it was argued Nicholas himself did not insight the original rebellion. Ivan forgave Nicholas' part in the Great War, and reasoned Nicholas was simply a pawn, insulting Nicholas. However, Nicholas was not loved at any place in Russia, and was killed along with his wife in an assassination deep in Siberia. His funeral was attended by many of the Russian nobility, giving him the honors of his position, despite noting his actions during the Great War, and was buried outside of the traditional royal arrangements.
