James Monroe
James Monroe
James Monroe was an American politician, father of Queen Elizabeth, and grandfather of Prince William, Princess Hortensia, and Prince John. When his daughter married the Crown Prince, he was barred by Congress to hold any formal federal power so as to refrain from nepotism spreading. At the ascension of King Augustus II, he became one of the most trusted advisors to his son-in-law, becoming the Secretary to the Monarch in all but title. It was his advice to create an American Royal House, instead of the royals to continue using the Hohenzollern name.
While interviewing with King Augustus I for a diplomatic position, Monroe began to propose strengthening the Royal House's image with the common people with a marriage between Augustus the Younger and his daughter, Elizabeth. The normally conservative Augustus the Elder was persuaded by the arguments on the grounds of national stability, but wished to avoid a morganatic marriage for the purposes of the monarchy's future. A compromise was met, and Monroe was named Earl of Albermarle, thus making the marriage one of nobility.
Monroe was also instrumental in the recognition of the Republic of Oregon and his mutual respect for President Thomas Jefferson. He convinced King Augustus II to recognize the Republic's sovereignty as the Kingdom's military reach was incapable of pressing their own claims across such a distance.
Monroe died in 1831 a controversial figure. He was honored for his work in strengthening the kingdom's prestige, but his opponents criticized his influence over the monarch.
