Landis Blackstone
Manerray Landis Blackstone (a.k.a. Larry)
Physical Description
General Physical Condition
Landis is in prime shape, especially for his age, with a good constitution and the thick muscle of a laborer.
Identifying Characteristics
Landis is missing four teeth on his lower left jaw, and he has the Mysteries of Death symbol tattooed on his upper arms. His neck has ghastly scarring from a plaguewight’s necrotizing touch. He conceals the scar with a shaggy copper-blonde beard.
Apparel & Accessories
Landis wears blue woolen tunics, which he buys in bulk when merchants are near. He never deviates from this style, and never explains why.
Mental characteristics
Personal history
Landis Blackstone’s family was travelling past Alcedene from Krezzym when a winter wight attacked the coach. The driver and both of his parents were killed, and the six-year-old Landis barely survived himself before the Alcedenean guards drove the creature off. He was adopted by the elderly manerray Tumbas Blackstone and apprenticed dutifully.
Just before his Becoming, a lawyer from Krezzym arrived with a bag of gold and a note stating that he owned property in the city. Landis set the lawyer to establishing the estate as a renthouse.
Landis’ Becoming was a little raid into Port Hugon, where he and his companions stole the mayor’s powdered wig. It still sits in the Alcedene trophy display, having resisted all attempts at recovery.
When he got back, Landis returned to his apprenticeship until Tumbas passed on from a pox. Landis was married to the daughter of a travelling caravan, had one son, and took care of her as she faded away from close exposure to a bosetor .
Landis apprentices his son, Keel, and the orphan Zinzi.
Sexuality
Landis has not had a relationship since the death of his wife.
Education
Landis was literate before his parents died; evidence of a high degree of tutelage. He apprenticed to Tumbas for a total of 19 years before taking over as manerray .
Employment
Accomplishments & Achievements
Landis was instrumental in acquiring the powdered wig of the mayor of Port Hugo. He also is responsible for eliminating three separate undead outbreaks before they became emergencies.
Failures & Embarrassments
One of the first times he was called upon as a new manerray was the death of the bandit and murderer Milesh Cromb a few miles outside of town. The bandit had wounded the vigilante who killed him, so the corpse had been left to rot in midwinter. Unwilling to venture into the night so far away from town, Landis left the body until morning. When he arrived, it was gone and the legend of the Winter Wight of Alcedene was born. While this is possibly just a local legend and the corpse may have been eaten by wolves, the possibility of having unleashed the same type of creature that killed his parents haunts him and he has a standing reward for anyone who finds and kills the thing.
Mental Trauma
Landis blames himself for the death of his wife and the condition of their son.
Intellectual Characteristics
Landis is quiet, sometimes taciturn, and prone to bouts of melancholy.
Morality & Philosophy
Landis is a virtuist. He believes that propping up good people results in good things, and that people should strive for self-improvement.
Taboos
Landis will not leave a body to rot, and will risk great personal dangers and his own wealth to recover one in his charge.
Personality Characteristics
Motivation
Landis is haunted by the traumas and failures of his past, and determined to prevent further damage and repair what he can.
Savvies & Ineptitudes
Landis is considered one of the best manerray in
Cambreath. While not a trained fighter, he is decent in a brawl and his spade has seen the decapitated end of more than one risen undead.
Likes & Dislikes
Landis’ one real indulgence is the money he sinks into fine wines. He’s generally a good conversationalist, so long as he can be left alone during his down-moods.
Landis can be extremely judgemental, particularly on the subjects of morality and laziness.
Virtues & Personality perks
Landis is a hardworking man with the sort of expertise in his field that only comes with reading.
Vices & Personality flaws
Landis will snap to judgements, and sometimes expresses his dislike of someone within minutes of meeting them.
He also displays a bit of martyr complex, intentionally not avoiding personal danger or discomfort during tasks.
Hygiene
Landis saves money by bathing in the same herb-scented oils that he preserves corpses with, giving him a sterile, medicinal scent that is instantly recognizable.
