Zinzi Krahe
Apprentice Zinzi Krahe (a.k.a. Zee)
"I know that those bandits had help in this town. It's the only thing that makes sense: the merchants were making an unscheduled stop in Foxhollow Farm, and they had arrived only a few hours before. They didn't hesitate, they knew exactly where all of us were. I had an arrow in me before I heard anything. They found the room my father and the merchant were sitting in, I heard them say their names. They said my father's name... my father didn't know any bandits. They even knew the combination to the safe...
"One day, I'll find out who betrayed us. They're going to wish that I hadn't."
~Apprentice Zinzi Krahe
Physical Description
General Physical Condition
Zinzi is underweight, regularly forgets to eat unless reminded, and as a result can be sickly, particularly in the winter. Her breath can be raspy, due to injuries sustained while she was young.
Identifying Characteristics
Zinzi has light freckles, and a bandit’s arrow has left a puckered, painful scar just under her left breast.
Physical quirks
Zinzi wheezes when physically straining or when the air is too cold.
Special abilities
Zinzi acquired a spellbook from the market somewhere along the way and has been studying it with single minded vigor. She could cast a few cantrips already by the time she was thirteen, an impressive feat for a hedge witch.
Apparel & Accessories
Zinzi wears her mother’s old clothes, resized to fit her smaller frame. As the wife of a reasonably wealthy farmhand, she had a love of quality silks and soft furs.
Mental characteristics
Personal history
Zinzi was a little girl when her father was killed in a bandit raid on Foxhollow Farm. A merchant wagon was staying there as guests of her parents and the combined wealth of the plantation and the merchant were too tempting a target.
Several dozen bandits swarmed over the farm’s meager defenses and slaughtered everyone they found; the merchants, the farmhands, Zinzi’s father and brother, and even a bard that was staying there for the night. Only Zinzi and her mother survived, and the farm was given to other tenants by Erazabethene Whitefeather.
Zinzi herself was found lying in a pool of her own blood, a bandit’s arrow impaling her lung. Her mother saved her using techniques from her years as the farm’s primary veterinarian.
Zinzi’s mother sent her to apprentice as Manerray while she left for Krezzym to find work. Zinzi hasn’t heard from her mother since.
Sexuality
Zinzi has never in living memory been on a date, nor expressed any interest in doing so. When she was fourteen, a boy attempting to court her was rebuffed with such biting, specific hatred that he didn’t appear in public for weeks, and even then had a fraction of his confidence left.
Education
In lessons, Zinzi is diligent and devoured knowledge more voraciously than any food. She routinely outpaces her tutors, and is even a match for Manerray Landis Blackstone at his own craft. She also remained isolated from other children for most of her life, treating them at best as if they had the plague, at worst as if they were pawns to manipulate in her schemes, which usually revolve around getting her hands on books the elders didn’t want her to have.
Employment
Zinzi works as an apprentice Manerray for Landis Blackstone, but most find it unlikely that she will stay in the craft as an adult, as her ambition is too powerful.
Accomplishments & Achievements
Zinzi has a corner of her room in the Alcedene Ossuary repurposed into a fungus farm for various medicinal purposes, the largest of its kind in the area.
She also has a mastery of magic on par if not exceeding a trained Tower apprentice, self taught from books she bought at market.
Failures & Embarrassments
Zinzi lost her temper at a festival once, flinging wine onto Erazabethene Whitefeather's dress. The Plutarch refused to let Landis pay for the expensive gown, and it’s a common rumor that Zinzi fumes about the implied debt.
Mental Trauma
The death of Zinzi’s household weighs heavy on her mind. It’s no secret that she’s convinced a conspiracy of townspeople aided the bandits.
Intellectual Characteristics
Zinzi is obsessive and diligent, with a wit that sometimes borders on shrewishness, and sometimes crosses the line.
Morality & Philosophy
Zinzi is a pragmatist, doing what she needs to do in order to accomplish a goal.
Taboos
Zinzi never lets a grudge go.
Personality Characteristics
Savvies & Ineptitudes
Zinzi is full of encyclopedic knowledge and boundless lore.
Likes & Dislikes
Zinzi loves to read both fiction and nonfiction, she loves stories and tales particularly when performed by a trained bard. Zinzi dislikes people, particularly young people.
Virtues & Personality perks
Zinzi has a strong sense for moderation, and rarely overdoes it on anything but her studies.
Vices & Personality flaws
Zinzi is wrathful, spiteful, and often irascible.
Hygiene
Zinzi bathes much as her mentor does, in herbal oils that transfer the sanitized, medicinal scent to her.
Social
Contacts & Relations
Landis Blackstone, Mentor. Keel Blackstone, fellow apprentice.
Religious Views
Social Aptitude
Zinzi is good at manipulating people, but bad at forming long term friendships. A small group of her fellow children claim to be able to see the ‘real Zinzi’, which is in her heart a good person.
Mannerisms
Zinzi instinctively maintains almost as much physical distance from others as emotional distance.
Hobbies & Pets
Zinzi has been working on making her own grimalkin
Speech
Zinzi speaks properly and forcefully, despite the wheeze that sometimes creeps in.
