History

Meijenfeld lies along a key route through the Alps. Prehistoric Bronze work and cellar have been found in the town and on St. Luis hill. An approximately 1300 years old station or settlement has been found along the old road. The 1600 or 1500 BAT map shows a place called Magia near today Meijenfeld.
The village is first mentioned in 1,169 BAT and was known as Lupinis at that time. The name of the village changed several times over the following centuries and included; Magnazia, Lupine, Magiining and Mage in Lupis. Finally, in 705 BAT the name Maienfeld was used, which eventually became Meijenfeld.   From the mid 1000 BAT until the mid 800 BAT, the counts of Spectrum ruled Meijenfeld. Their castle at Meijenfeld was destroyed in 921 BAT by Enry IV during the Kauton Rule conflict. The current Meijefeld manor was initially built in 730–725 BAT by the Von Aspermount family and later by Federald V. In 535 BAT it was rebuilt and expanded by the Baron von Brandy. The town was also fortified in the 600 BAT. A 4.5 m tall and 1 m thick section of wall is still standing today. The town walls enclosed an area of about 120 m × 170 m. The walls were thickened and raised to 9.6 m in the 500 BAT and then, in a third phase, topped with 1.8 m thick crenelations and raised to 10.5 m.   Meijenfeld is first mentioned as a town in 654 BAT, however it seems to have lacked a town government (until 563) or guilds. In 612 BAT Meijenfeld acquired the rights to charge a toll on the route across the Alps, that was the safest way to cross them. Meijenfeld also had a market, though the neighboring city of Maians had the market right.
