Reikland

Reikland (Unberogen: Reichland, Classical: Unberia), officially the Grand Princedom of Reikland, is one of the ten grand provinces that comprise the Empire. It covers an area of approximately 100,000 square miles and its grand prince is estimated to rule some 1,900,000 Human inhabitants, as well as small populations of Halflings, Dwarfs, Elves, and Ogres. Its capital and largest city is Altdorf, which lies in the north of Reikland and currently also stands as the capital of the Empire as a whole. Reikland has been ruled by Grand Prince Karl-Franz I since 2502IC.

Geography

Reikland lies to the west of the Empire near the centre of the Old World. Middenland lies to its north, Talabeland and Stirland to its east, Wissenland to its south, Bretonnia and several Dwarfen Holds to its south and south-west, and the Wasteland lies to its west. Reikland has no coastline, but the Reik, the largest river in the Old World that defines Reikland's snaking western and northern borders, is so wide that an entire navy of warships and merchant vessels ply its length. Reikland's territory covers 100,000 square miles, of which TBC square miles is land, and TBC miles is water. It is the 5th largest grand province in the Empire.

Elevation ranges from the peaks of Grey Mountains in the south, with the highest point of TBC at 16,811 feet, down to the Grootscher Marshes to the north-west at just 57 feet above sea level. Reikland's centre is dominated by the Skaag Hills and the Hagercrybs, two forested uplands that host several unexplored regions. Most of the middle and north of Reikland is covered in the Reikwald Forest, which extends the length of the grand province from east to west. Most woodlands are coniferous, though broad deciduous stretches extend along the many rivers. Much of the land near the river Reik is waterlogged and marshy, with almost a quarter of its length giving away to bogs, swamps, and dangerous mud plains, the largest of which is the Grootscher Marsh on the border with the Wasteland.

Politics

Reikland is a federal state under a constitutional monarchy. Grand Prince Karl-Franz I is the monarch and head of state. Sovereignty is shared between the grand prince and the Reikland Diet, a parliament comprised of the rulers of the Reikland Estates, the direct vassals of the grand prince of Reikland. Both the grand prince and the Reikland diet has the right to issue edicts, but they are not considered law without the assent of the other body. Without the assent of both the grand prince and the Reikland Diet, an edict is called a decree. A decree is a statement of intent only, and is not enforceable by law. The grand prince is aided in all duties by The Reikland Council, which the grand prince appoints, and is usually comprised of the most influential members of the Reikland Diet.

The Reikland Constitution was established by Magnus the Pious in 2303IC. It cannot be reformed without a Reikland edict and the assent of the Emperor. Amongst many other matters, Reikland's constitution strictly defines the military obligations and limitations of the Reikland Estates and of Reikland as a whole. Each estate must train and maintain a number of regiments for the Reikland State Army as determined by edict. Most baronies must maintain one State Army regiment, most counties and duchies must maintain two, and most marches maintain three. A Reikland estate may not train more regiments than edict demands without a new edict granting permission. The grand prince has the right to call upon the Reikland Estates for all State Army regiments if the Reikland or the Empire declares a war against an external threat. The overall command of the Reikland State Army is then given to the grand prince. In turn, the Emperor has the right to call upon Reikland's State Army when the Empire goes to war against an external enemy. The overall command of the Reikland State Army is then given to the Emperor.
