Leaving Neverwinter
Nightal 7 Waning gibbous moon
The Neverwinter Harpers have sent two new people with us.
Timeline of events relevant to Ebondeath
A timeline of events relevant to the hunt of Ebondeath gleaned from Harper records and research:
615 – Uthtower falls – a devastating battle between forces of humans, orcs, and demi-humans takes place at Uthtower and the dead are littered everywhere. Some remaining human soldiers begged the royal wizard to save them. Unfortunately, the royal wizard had become a lich. He flooded the area and thus created the Mere of Dead Men.
685 – The Uthtower is occupied by a black dragon - Chardansearavitriol (also known as Ebondeath) moves into the ruined Uthtower and rules the swamp for centuries
922 – Chardansearavitriol becomes a dracolich – under the influence of a priest of Myrkul named Strongor Bonebag, Chardansearavitriol becomes a dracolich. Bongbag becomes the head of a sect of the Dragon Cult who worships Chardansearavitriol at the ruins and mausoleum of Uthtower.
996 – Chardansearavitriol is killed - the dracolich enters the Necropolis Shard thanks to the efforts of a diverse team who created a Circle of 7 to trap it’s soul between it’s dead body and it’s phylactery.
1002 – The Eye of Myrkul – A celestial event occurs when the new moon of Selune enters a constellation known as the Circle of Mystra. During this event, the remains of Chardansearavitriol crumble to dust. Cultists take it as a sign that Chardansearavitriol is ascending to godhood and they flock to Uthtower.
1358 – Myrkul dies – the cult of Chardansearavitriol collapses during the time when the leadership of the Cult of the Dragon moves their focus to the worship and reemergence of Tiamat. The location of the urn with Chardansearavitriol’s remains is lost.
1450 – Myrkul returns – the cult of Chardansearavitriol is reborn under Ularan Mortus. It is believed that they have found the urn with the remains of Chardansearavitriol in it. Ularan Mortus is now seeking a new body for Chardansearavitriol.
1492 – Chardansearavitriol’s soul is freed – the dracolich, perhaps with the aid of cultists, tricks a group of adventurers into releasing his soul from the Necropolis Shard.
Research in Neverwinter
Amarille and Helaena make their way to the Denir wing of the Temple of Ohgma. After some searching about they eventually find themselves in a section of religious treatises. They find themselves following mentions of the Cult of the Dragon whose leadership has claimed prophetic knowledge that Dracoliches will eventually rise to rule the world as gods. There’s a book on Merkul that mentions a schism in the cult that happened following the death of Merkul in 1350. Merkul had been a powerful ally to dracoliches, but with his death many of the cults surrounding individual dracolichs collapsed. Another book mentions that the Cult of the Dragon then changed their focus. The “Wearers of Purple” as the cult leadership is called began to work to bring Tiamat back into the world. When Merkul was reborn in 1450 the leadership of the cult faced a schism. Part of the cult continued to worship Tiamat and still today work to bring her back. Others went back to the cults of the dracoliches as supported by Merkul and the power he gives to many priests in the cults.
Information on phylacteries is thin. They are known to frequently be small and sometimes take the form of a gem. They are always well hidden. Helaena is able to share what she know of the methods of tracing and trapping a dracolich’s soul after it is killed but before it reaches it’s phylactery. She speaks in general terms about a circle of 7 who can trap a dracolich’s soul in an alternate reality so that it cannot be reborn into a new body.
By the end they have sore eyes and empty bellies and head back to the inn for dinner.
In the gatehouse
Uktar 28, waxing gibbous moon
Amarille skids slightly as she comes to a stop in the gatehouse again. She places her hands on her knees and intentionally calms her breathing. She observes a drop of moisture that slips off the point of her ear as it falls to the stone floor; the frost in her hair must have started to melt. She clenches her fingers in the fabric covering her knees and then stands upright. She knows that if she looked to her left shoulder she would see YueLiang. Instead, she looks at those around her.
They look hurt. Some of them look worried, some of them look frightened. She locks eyes with Helaena for a moment and then with Keth. She has some choices to make. She can see death looming large for her on this day and she can choose how to meet it. She turns her attention inwards and prays to Selune for strength, fortitude, and clarity.
Friendship
Uktar 25, waxing half moon
It's scary having friends.
To the Tower
Uktar 20, Waxing crescent
It was gratifying to be right about the ghost and the crab. That was the only positive part of the whole day so far. She was grateful to Eethyl for his quick thinking with the Feather Fall spell. That would have ended badly otherwise. She didn’t know what he was doing with the crab though. Did he think they were going to leave him behind while they went on to the tower? Not only was the causeway clearly unsafe (especially for a smaller body such as that of a gnome) but they clearly needed his spells and knowledge to figure out what to do once they got to the top.
--------------------------------------------------
The skin prickled across the tops of her shoulders and down the backs of her arms. Everything about this place felt wrong. There was the heavy smell of ozone and the unnatural charge in the atmosphere, but that was easily explained by the lightning and the storms being drawn to the tower. In the past she had felt like a situation was going to go sideways before the trouble had started. She knew that feeling well from the last few decades. She knew to listen to that instinct. What she was feeling was something else. Was it the god? She had never knowingly been under the direct regard of a god before. She had prayed, of course. She had felt a vague sense of comfort from Selune. Again, this was different. She was intensely wary, but didn’t speak up. What would she have said?
----------------------------------------
Flicker pointed the stone at her. She had seen Eethyl, Keth, and Flicker talking about it a few days ago, but she hadn’t been able to hear what they were saying. Now it seemed like it was allowing Flicker to see something? She was holding it up to her eye. Then Flicker started asking about her ‘Animal Friend’ and Amarille realized slowly she meant YueLiang. In that moment the whole world stilled and she felt an icy cold wash over her. No one, absolutely no one, had ever seen YueLiang before. And if she’d had to pick someone, it sure as the void wouldn’t have been Flicker. On top of the feeling of dread it was too much to handle at once. She put Flicker off until later. Flicker seeing YueLiang was a problem that was going to keep. The sinister presence in the tower is what needed her focus in this moment. Everything in it’s own time.
At the Druids Cottage
Uktar 16, Waxing crescent moon
I just finished standing watch with Keth outside the Druids cottage. It has been a trying few days for him. I had thought that speaking about his mother would bring him comfort, but perhaps I was wrong. Vengeance doesn’t seem to be helping him. Perhaps it is too soon. There is still one cultist left, will killing them bring him peace? If not, who is left after that? Talos himself? Keth wouldn’t be the first to hate a god, but what peace can there be in that? I hope this doesn’t break him.
Eethyl has been surprisingly clear and forthcoming. It makes me wonder if his rambling is a condition that comes and goes or if he’s simply aware of the need to communicate more clearly. He did a pretty bit of magic at the stone circle to illustrate a memory. I think that it came about that Sefilwyn recognized a member of his family. Humans aren’t meant to be so long lived. I wonder at the effect it has on her mind. Are humans equipped to handle an understanding of the long arc of time like that?
