Cryovain
24 Marpenoth, The Year of Twelve Warnings (1494 DR)
Neverwinter Wood, The Sword Coast
While continuing his quest to recover the Clasp of Vergren, Brimsdall and his giant badger sidekick, Wink, ran into a hunter named Falcon in the Neverwinter Wood. Falcon offered to have Brimsdall and Wink stay at his hunting lodge. During a game of Baldur's Bones, Falcon tasked Brimsdall with clearing the old manse at the edge of the forest of its half-orc denizens. In return, Falcon would give Brimsdall a magical item, a pair of Boots of Elvenkind.
Brimsdall awoke to the sound of someone knocking frantically at the gues house's door.
When he opened it, he saw Pell. The boy couldn't speak but was kept pointing towards where the bridge just outside the lodge. Brimsdall quickly grabbed his pouch of material components and followed the young boy. Wink followed close behind.
Once he reached the open door he saw Falcon on the wooden bridge. The hunter's longbow was drawn back tight. He had an arrow knocked and aimed at...a white dragon just beyond the bridge!
Brimsdall had never seen a dragon in all the years he'd been alive. True, being a dragonborn meant the blood of dragons ran through his vains, but Brimsdall never imagined he'd actually ever meet one during his lifetime.
The dragon wasn't as big as some he'd seen illuminated in dusty tomes regarding such powerfully magical creatures or drawn in children's storybooks his parents read to him. It was bigger than a horse but certainly weighed far more than any horse he'd ever seen. The dragon's wingspan was easily forty feet to either side of its muscular serpentine body. Its scales were almost pure white as fresh snow and caught glinted off the morning light.
The dragon raised its head and spoke with a voice that chilled Brimsdall to the core. "I am Cryovain," the dragon said. "This forest is mine to claim and you are trespassing in it."
"I think not," Falcon said. He kept an arrow aimed at the dragon. "I am Falcon the hunter. This is my lodge. You, therefore, are trespassing on my land!"
"We shall see who truly lays claim to these lands," Cryovain said. With a mighty beat of his wings, the dragon took to the air and flew towards the bridge.
Falcon let loose an arrow. It snapped as it struck's the dragon's thick scaled hide.
The dragon flew straight at Falcon, its claws outstretched. Cryovain attempted to rake the hunter right off the bridge but Falcon was able to dodge in time. The dragon's massive claws caught the bridge's wooden railing, tearing a large part of it off.
The dragon sped on past the bridge.
Brimsdall saw the dragon fly past Falcon and begin to circle around for a second run. He sent Wink to fight alongside Falcon while he prepared a spell.
Meanwhile, Falcon let loose two arrows. One shot over the dragon while the other was blown aside by Cryovain's powerful wings.
Brimsdall uttered an incantation and pointed at Cryovain. Five glowing darts of magical force sprung from the tip of Brimsdall's finger. All five darts struck Cryovain simultaneously.
Cryovain roared in pain, and anger, as he felt the force of magic missiles strike him. The solid impacts almost caused Cyrovain to veer to his right and slam into a copse of trees. But he was able to keep control of his flight, and with a mighty beat of his outstretched wings, he rose towards the sky.
Cryovain looked back towards the lodge as the trees began to recede beneath him. His keen eyes spotted the source of the spell that hurt him. "Who are you, spellcaster, that would dare face me?"
Brimsdall stepped onto the bridge. "I am Brimsdall. Your doom."
Cryovain sneered and roared in fury. "We shall meet again someday, spellcaster. I will relish the day you die by my claws!"
"And I will relish the day you feel the power of my spells, dragon," Brimsdall yelled aloud. "Consider what I just did as a taste of what's to come."
Cryovain roared in anger once more. It flew south until the dragon disappeared from sight.
Brimsdall felt a strong hand clap him on the shoulder. "You did it!" Falcon said.
"I did what?"
"You bested a dragon!" Falcon moved past Brimsdall and entered the lodge.
Brimsdall stood on the bridge. Wink moved up beside him. He bent down to pet his faithful sidekick.
Brimsdall smiled.
He had in fact bested a dragon this day.
He just hoped that he could do it again if he ever ran into Cryovain again.
Before going back inside the lodge, Brimsdall had a feeling he would be seeing Cryovain again.
