Session 18: No Good Deed
General Summary
Still reeling from the attacks in Easthaven Square the party's nerves slowly began to calm as they now found themselves inside the carriage on the Roc's back. This however was unlike any normal carriage; rather than a typical vehicle the interior was a large room with a cozy seating area in one corner, an array of books on shelves covering one wall, and a large round table dominating the center of the room. Immediately after carrying Nix's body into the carriage Sergeant James collapsed, joining her and Reinaldo among those unconscious. Morthos still carried pieces of Bulwarks metallic exoskeleton in his arms as he walked over to one of the several windows in this chamber. Below he looked upon Easthaven which was now brightly ablaze among the night sky.
One of the human individuals along with the satyr gathered at the round table examining the Chardayln fragments the satyr had gathered. The human slammed the massive warhammer from Bulwark down on table as he spoke to the group, “I must say, you blokes put up one hell of a fight down there. It would be an absolute pity if we hadn’t shown up when we did. The name is Mad Jack Dawkins of Lunar Enterprises. This here is my esteemed colleague Undevvur Thort,” as he motioned to the satyr closely examining the Chardalyn through a monocle. "And this is Mr. Jak'dal Kemp, another associate of mine" as he calmly gestured to the elf individual while igniting a lighter.
Looking up from the lit cigar in his hand he called out across the chambers, “Well, well, well, Vellynne Harpell I presume? It’s been awhile since I’ve been by the Ivy Mansion, how’s Adanac faring these days?” Vellynne stepped forth from the corner of the room looking at the the satyr pouring over the Chardalyn, “I see that you’re still dabbling with items, that of which you have no business with? Haven’t you learnt your lesson after nearly destroying Mirabar with your Chromatic Slugs?”
Revealing the firearm from the inside of his long coat he proclaimed, “All part of the learning process, my love. A small price to pay in the grand scheme of things. Besides, that small price is what saved your ass back there.” He pulled out the empty shell from within and reloaded his gun with another Chromatic Slug. Captain Arlaggath, still smoldering from being caught in the firearms wake, was visibly fuming but only for a moment. A look of understanding and acceptance washed over her face as she realize that they did indeed save their lives.
The flight to Bryn Shander was short and quiet. Mr. Kemp was able to calculate the flying speed and average time it would take to level the towns and concluded that Chardalyn Dragon would make its final stop in Bryn Shander in approximately 25-30 hours. Before reaching the town Mr. Kemp shrouded the roc and carriage with an indivisibly spell. Looking out even under the veil of night, the walls of the town can been seen standing some 30 feet high. They are defined by two concentric rings of upright wooden poles, the gap between them filled with dirt and rubble. The outer ring of poles rises above the top of the wall, providing a rampart for defenders stationed on the wood-planked walkway. The wall’s hinged gates are 15 feet tall and can be barred from the inside with iron-banded wood beams. These gates are closed when it’s dark outside—which is to say more often than not. As the roc circled wide around the town once it made a dive bomb down towards the hillside just outside of the outer walls. Rather than crashing however, the roc and carriage entered a tight tunnel several hundred meters long which ended in a dome shaped rough hewn cavern.
As the party exited the carriage Jack Dawkins escorted them through a series of protected rooms including an aviary built specifically for rocs, a closed off atrium that contained several huge beasts resembling a nightmarish parody of a wolf. These beasts had teeth too big for its mouth, rows of bone spurs flanking its spine, and a whip-like tail ending in a club. Their onlooking eyes burned a malevolent red as the group passed by.
Before entering the chambers above the group approached a set of fortified double doors that emitted a blueish-purple glow that could be seen from outside. Before entering Jack called out in the draconic tongue, "Mak Gemadan rine un eterna." (A homage to the Ancient Gold Dragon Gemadan). The double doors opened up into a grand chamber with a pyramid structure in the center. Atop the pyramid sat an undead ancient blue dragon that had it's distinguishing horn broken off. The party walked past the dragon uninterrupted and into the tavern above.
After the party finished a long rest, they were summoned back to the private quarters upstairs. When they arrived to the bedside of Reinaldo, there were three other individuals accompanying Evanté; Mr. Kemp along with a dark-skinned half-orc in full plate decorated beautifully with vines and vibrant flowers and a young elf woman with wild curly red hair. They watched as the half-orc conducted a ritual that allowed the skin on Reinaldo to regrow and completely mend his wounds. Reinaldo now healthy as ever joined all of them as they entered the workshop where B.A.D.G.I.R. had completely pieced back together Bulwark. The entire group joined in a resurrection ritual conducted by the elf woman as they successfully brought Bulwark back from the fold. Over joyed the party thanked the half-orc and elf woman before they took their leave with Mr. Kemp.
Evanté and B.A.D.G.I.R. made sure the group was properly outfitted to take care of the impending threat of the Chardalyn dragon which should reach Bryn Shander within the next day. However no good deed goes unpunished as Evanté had a task for the group to do. Reinaldo staying behind, the crew would be teleported into the sewers beneath Targos. They would then make their way into a secret Zhentarim outpost hidden below the Luskan Arms tavern which coincidentally severs as Speaker Naerth Maxildanarr's residence. Once they successfully made their way in, Evanté gave them specific instructions to recover a Remorhaz Egg which would be there amongst other contraband.
The party was successful in their mission after making their way through the sewers and encountering a couple of guards. In the final Sanctum Chamber however they were met by Speaker Maxildanarr and Captain Skath, the red tiefling who had given Morthos a difficult time last time they were in Targos. Battled ensured as the the familiar metallic roar of the Chardalyn Dragon could be heard from above. It seemed the the Chardalyn Dragon had already made its way to Targos and was wreaking havoc. The party defeated Speaker Maxildanarr and the red tiefling and quickly made their way to the locked safe that allegedly coveted their prize. When they opened the safe, it was empty.
Suddenly in the corner of the Sanctum near a desk and wall of book shelves they noticed Evanté now plainly visible. With a grin on his face he reached out and grabbed the set of books that were opened on the desk and in an instant he teleported away. By this time the entire chamber was rumbling and the Dragon's roar was growing louder. The party quickly made their way back to the exit point where they were able to teleport back to the safety of the Northlook.
When they arrived, they saw Evanté sitting in a plush leather chair with the book he had just stolen open in his lap. With a familiar grin on his face he called out to the group, "Welcome back Comrades, I am glad you have returned safely."
Bryn Shander
Undead Iymrith
Before entering the chambers above the group approached a set of fortified double doors that emitted a blueish-purple glow that could be seen from outside. Before entering Jack called out in the draconic tongue, "Mak Gemadan rine un eterna." (A homage to the Ancient Gold Dragon Gemadan). The double doors opened up into a grand chamber with a pyramid structure in the center. Atop the pyramid sat an undead ancient blue dragon that had it's distinguishing horn broken off. The party walked past the dragon uninterrupted and into the tavern above.
The party later learned that this was once Iymrith, the Doom of the Desert. Her body was recovered from her lair within the Anauroch Desert and brought here for Jack Dawkins to mass produce Chromatic Slugs. She was defeated in her lair nearly 100 years ago by a famed group of adventurers known as The Ragtags. The party came to discover the tavern above known as the Northlook to be a front for the Lunar Enterprises operations. This specific outpost here in the far north is run by a gold dragonborn known as Evanté Montorvich. Evanté welcomed Jack with open arms before Mad Jack and Thort, made their leave by means of teleportation. Mr. Kemp however stayed around briefly to see that the entire party was well taken care of. The group including Captain Arlaggath and unconscious Sergeant James was escorted to the reserved upstairs portion of tavern. This hidden upstairs section was clearing another gather chambers for Lunar Enterprises. This specific outpost contained many different chambers including an archive for Lunar Enterprises, infirmary, teleportation circle, an observatorium outfitted with a massive telescope, as well as a workshop that was run by a rock gnome named B.A.D.G.I.R. Here in the top chambers, it became apparent to Mr. Kemp that Reinaldo would need much more than traditional salves to heal the burns caused by the Chardalyn Dragon's radiant breath. Before teleporting away Mr. Kemp told the party that he would return with someone who could help. The party left Reinaldo and Sergeant James within the infirmary for Evanté's unseen servants to tend to. Similarly they left Bulwark with B.A.D.G.I.R. within his workshop to see if he could piece the warforged back together. Exhausted, Nix, Morthos, and Atalanta retreated to rooms provided by Evanté here at the Northlook. Shortly after getting to their room, a knock at the door broke the silence. Captain Arlaggath assisted a very wounded Sergeant James into the room. James asked for Nix to join him downstairs, as there were many questions he had for her after seeing her in her true Changling form for the first time. The two left and spent the evening together genuinely getting to know each other. Nix's deception about not being herself was the only thing that remotely bother James. He saw her for the true individual she. After they had left, Captain Arlaggath expressed her gratitude towards the group before leaving to meet with the head Speaker of Tentowns and representative of Bryn Shander, Speaker Devusa Shane.
