Split between loyality to Logres and King Uther and to his Cornish family who was tied to Gorlois, Graid ended up siding with the crown, and in spite of Gorlois being a friend of his lineage, it was Graid who became the bane of the old duke. That action earned him the title of Lord of Axe, his ancestral homeland. He left Sarum, and took on responsibilities in Ascalon. Axe Hall was filled with the small army of children that Graid's wives provided, but most of the clergy despised the polygamous Lord. He won many victories among his friends of Sarum, and However, his deeds also earned him the ire of a young Morgan; and it is said that Graid found his heart harden towards what he once held most dear. In the Anarchy, Lord Axe swore loyality to King Idres of Cornwall, uniting the two tribes of Corneus' lineage under one crown again.
After a short while, Idres named him Constable of Cornwall, after the Invasion of Jagent. When Sir Aldwyn of Newton died in 506, it was the last time that Sarum saw Graid as their friend.
It was at Netley Marsh where Graid finally showed where his loyalities were, as his lance was the bane of more than one of his former comrades, ending the life of Sir Cecil ap Llyr and Cirdan de Brun
