Tolóni

Keeper of the Dead

Don't fret, my son. My fate is in the hands of Tolóni now. She might deem that my time has come, but perhaps I am meant to live for a while longer. All we can do is wait and see.
— Palír Navalháli, someone's father
Tolóni, the Keeper of the Dead, is the second-born daughter of Palális and Elíhilis, according to the Pantheon of the Dawn. She was created to bring death to the wildlife that her sister, Heláia, had formed on Riel, bringing change and progress to the world and filling the afterlife, Riehelíhei, with inhabitants. Tolóni works closely with her mother, Elíhilis, to guide the dead to the afterlife, but she is also a caring guardian to the dying and the sick.

Deliverer of the Deceased

Be vary of those Tolóni types. You never know what they're up to when the rest of us are partaking in festivities. And to think that so many of them look after our ill! What if they're sending our brothers and sisters to an early grave to appease their god?
— A Tolóni skeptic
After Heláia had filled the world with beautiful greenery and animals, bringing life to the land and seas, a serious problem had become evident. Her mother, Elíhilis, noticed that the world was filling up too fast, causing conflicts between the animals over precious territory. Heláia had tried to counter the problem by using her powers to stop the wildlife from reproducing and growing, but that wasn't enough. The world had become stagnant and cruel.   Tolóni was the solution to all those problems. As she was born, she brough a devastating plague upon the world, killing a significant amount of the wildlife. The disease killed quickly without pain, but the shock of what had happened tarnished Heláia's opinion of her younger sister.

Making Amends

It took a long time, but eventually Heláia grew to understand the purpose of mortality. The pain from the loss of all the life lost in the plague faded and the time had come for her to make amends with Tolóni. The two sisters began to love and respect one another and when Heláia created the geprati, Tolóni took on the burden of delivering these new intelligent beings to the afterlife.

Cult of Tolóni

Followers dedicated to the Keeper of the Dead are commonly found everywhere where the Pantheon of the Dawn is prevalent. Many of them work in hospitals and in graveyards, caring for the ill and burying the dead.   Tolóni’s followers are commonly described as quiet and reserved, preferring to avoid large gatherings and socialising. This lack of interaction with the rest of society has caused rumours to emerge surrounding their activities, which has caused the public to lack trust in those devoted to Tolóni. The negative perception has, in turn, resulted in the members of the cult from distancing themselves from everyone else, resulting in even more division.

Of course there are rumours that her worshippers are sinister. I like that they take care of the ill. If anything they would make sure death is as stress free as possible.
