Accursed Sea

The Accursed Sea is a body of water southwest of the continent of L'Ahr'Thresi. The sea lies where a large fertile plain once was, but that plain was submerged in the cataclysm at the end of the War of Undying. The land immediately north of the sea is called the Cursed Waste due to its shattered and lifeless landscape, as well as the preponderance of monstrosities and undead to be found there, but it was created much later. The Accursed Sea is likewise considered cursed because the entire population of the land that was submerged became undead when they drowned, and the result is a terrifying number and variety of watery undead, ranging from the typical skeleton, zombie, ghost, haunt, spectre, wraith, or banshee to the more exotic vampires, lacedon, hecuva, vampiric ixitxachitl, kelpies, crimson death, or rusalka and even the truly terrifying living walls, bodak, spawn of kyuss, devourers, and grave titans. The Accursed Sea is also filled with a vast array of ghost ships and similar threats. It is said that any who sail upon that sea for a full day and a night will never escape the foul region, and will join the undead hordes in their eternal prison beneath the waves. The sea is constantly covered in fog and mists, and even from shore it's clearly no place to travel. The few kingdoms in the Kingdoms of the Sands with borders on the sea must maintain constant vigilance (and well built seawalls) to defend against frequent waves of the unliving hordes that emerge from beneath these accursed waters.

It is certain, however, that entire ruined cities also lie beneath these waters, and the curse upon this region does not entirely deter would-be treasure hunters, several thousand of whom lose their lives to the undead each year while trying to find the lost treasures of a wealthy land. The extremely rare individual or group that survives their foray into these dangerous waters has returned with tales of horror, tales of cities seeming to be alive because there are so many phantoms and other undead, and just enough fabulous treasures of a lost world to keep the foolish coming.
