Changelings
Changelings are creatures which live on the borders of worlds, waiting to catch a ride from one location to the next. They are often called hitchhikers, though they refer to themselves as “Apex.” In ideal conditions, they will latch onto a fertile woman and form as a human embryo which grows to adulthood as the smartest, most talented and most beloved of its siblings (if applicable). All mundane tests and many magical ones identify such changelings as human.
The true change begins as the changeling reaches full maturity, around 20 or 21 years old. As they have spent their lives cultivating a devoted following, they allow themselves to begin conquering their native society. In some cases, this means running for government office. In others, it means undermining authority figures to make the residents dependent on the changeling in place of their own people. An unopposed changeling can often take control of an entire county district without bloodshed in less than six months. Some of the greatest dictators and conquerors in human history were changelings.
