History
The Well of Dreams came into being after the Compact sealed the quori away from the waking world. Desperate to have a way to find vessels for their souls in the way against the corruption in their homeland, they built the well as a sort of portal to allow them to find children not yet born and possess their bodies. These children are born as kalashtar, and their true souls are often shriveled, aborted husks of what they could have been. The quori spirits inhabiting their bodies do not begin to show until their late teens and it is only a matter of time after that before the mortal soul disintegrates completely, and all traces of the child's former identity vanish.
The kalashtar that survive to adulthood congregate around the well, and their children are often born kalashtar as well. It is their sacred duty to maintain and protect the well, but they are not always successful.
Governess Alison Teliarde ordered the destruction of the well after her daughter was born kalashtar - that is, soulless. This has not stopped the birth of kalashtar around the well and even further afield, but now the well cannot be tended to properly.
Drinking from the Well of Dreams
Any attempt to drink from the well requires a DC 15 Constitution Saving Throw. If you succeed, you fall asleep immediately and gain a prophetic dream. If you fail, you immediately fall asleep and have a 30% chance of having a terrible nightmare. You have a 70% chance of having a beautiful dream.
