"A"

The person responsible for guiding and engineering the various misdeeds that Auren Vrood performed while he and the Whispering Way were attempting to release the Whispering Tyrant is simply known to the Fellowship as "A".   The Fellowship has recently come to believe that "A" could be Prince Adamondais Virholt, a bishop of the Ustalavic Pharasmin church who was believed to have died at Gallowspire, fighting against the Whispering Tyrant.

The Letters

(Main Article: Letters from “A”   Count Caromarc and the Fellowship itself has received various Letters from “A”.

The Count's Letter

A letter received by the Count has "A" begins with them reminiscing apparently about time they spent as a student with the Count and Letter to Professor Crowl. It then goes on ask if the Count would look at "a rather curious Tome" that their retainers would be bringing to them. Although it is not currently know at this time, it is possible the tome they are referring to is the Pnakotic Manuscript.

The Fellowship would receive their first letter from "A" not long after the events at Harrowstone. In it, "A" praises them because "the ghosts of Harrowstone have been banished". They go on to explain that they were directly responsible for the events that led to the freeing of the ghosts because they wished to see how the town of Ravengro would be affected. They conclude with saying they are not angry at the Fellowship's involvement and they hope that "should [their] paths cross again, that [their] interests might be more aligned with each other".

The second letter from "A" came after the Fellowship retook Schloss Caromarc. In this missive, "A" explains how they are "delighted to see [them] again". They go on to apologize for Vrood's behavior by augmenting Caromarc's defenses and the tragedy it caused. Again they congratulate the Fellowship for their actions, but caution them on acting further against their plans as their "relationship might become somewhat adversarial". They conclude that they do not expect them to meet Vrood in conflict and hope to meet once their plans "have borne fruit".

The most recent letter from "A" was received after leaving Feldgrau en route to Carrion Hill after vanquishing Auren Vrood. In this letter, "A" again congratulates the Fellowship on their success and having made it through the Shudderwood and well as Vrood. They state that they are not angry at the loss of Vrood because they had engineered it so they would encounter him in Feldgrau and not somewhere closer to anonymous letter writer. He encourages the Fellowship to celebrate their accomplishments and not to continue their pursuits as they "will no longer hold back" and "will not hesitate to destroy [them]".

The Raven's Head

The religious artifact known as the Raven's Head is a heavy gold-plated mace, the head of which is shaped like four ravens. It was wielded by Prince Virholt, and both were thought to have been lost at the battle of Gallowspire against the Whispering Tyrant. Gaster Lucas had been looking for the Raven's Head for "A", most likely as a component for the Carrion Crown as suggested by the Ciphered Poem.   The handle of the Raven's Head was most recently found in the Skum tunnels underneath Illmarsh. It is an old peachwood mace handle emgraved with the spiral symbol of Pharasma. One side is wrapped in stained leather, and the other capped with a golden metal. It is clear that the metal-capped side once housed the head of the mace.
