Hyperion Space Exploration Institution

The Hyperion Space Exploration Institution was an exploratory company primarily comprised of humans. Hyperion focused its operations toward the core of the Milky Way. The HSEI ran its own 2 to 4 year officer academy that it contracted through. The HSEI was funded by government research grants from various human and terran colonies, along with donations from large businesses.
The HSEI was founded two years before the Terran Rebellion began. Hyperion ships were appropriated and repurposed for war by the United Planets Astronavy. A few years into the rebellion the UPSS built up its own astronavy enough that the HSEI ships were released. After Hyperion's founder and first CEO, George Abraham, resigned, he was replaced by Maria Freeborn, a founder and former captain. The HSEI's most succesful exploratory vessel was Virage, built in 2160. The vessel, captained by Jessi Freeborn, discovered the species lavan and kortarl.
By 2168 the United Commonwealth's tax revenue had been cut so much that state grants dried up. The HSEI was unable to support itself through private donations at its bloated size. Instead of downsizing Maria Freeborn decided to sell the company's assets to the United Commonwealth Astronavy. Virage was docked at Cerberus Station and refitted as a warstar.
