Captain Jessi Franziska Freeborn (a.k.a. Red, Jess)

Jessi Freeborn is the captain of UCS Virage, a human exploration ship recently retroffited as a warstar.
Jessi was born on earth, in Christchurch, New Zealand, to a very wealthy family. Her father Gordon was the captain of UCS Stalwart, a UCAS battleship that had extended service fighting ordel splinters. Her mother Maria was a founder of the Hyperion Space Exploration Institution. Jessi lived with her mother through her childhood, they moved between stations constantly to stay at various HSEI offices. She was fascinated with every new culture she came across on the different stations. Jessi cherished the few brief shore-leaves she shared with her father. He was always a hero figure to her, and she always wanted to be just like him when she grew up.
When Asgaard colony was destroyed Jessi was aboard Endeavor, an HSEI ship assigned to assist in rescue alongside several UCAS ships. The rescue mission was an absolute disaster; millions died to logistical and bureaucratic issues. Jessi became dedicated to saving and sparing any life she had the opportunity to. One of the people rescued by Endeavor was Adin Servaas, and the two became good friends in the few days they had together.
Days before she was slated to begin HSEI officer academy, Jessi was sent on a tour of the Stalwart with other prospective students. While they were aboard, Stalwart was called to intercept an Iron Moons destroyer that was incurring into UPTC space. When they arrived, the ordel had boarded and taken hostages aboard Immunitaire, a human civilian transport liner. They demanded negotiations be opened, and Gordon responded by destroying Immunitaire and severely crippling the destroyer. Jessi saw this violence as a response to fear, people turn to violence when they know their words would lose. Her father was a coward.
Jessi left for HSEI academy at 18. She fit in well with all sorts of groups of people, and she had more friends with benefits than regular friends. She hit her rebellious streak in academy, she slashed her hair, dyed it red, and got tattooed. She even got money from her parents to get stimplants, but she committed to very minimal training. She met and became very good friends with Gershom of Rayniolt during this time. For the first time in her life she wasn’t constantly jumping between stations, allowing her to form a deeper bond with Gershom than anyone else she ever had. He was her first long-term romantic relationship. Jessi graduated her classes with average grades, never excelling.
Jessi spent her spare time designing a new exploration and research vessel, named Virage, meant for the HSEI. She got her mother to pull some strings and commission the vessel’s construction in 2160. Jessi was promoted to Brevet Commander on HEV Cavalier straight out of the academy and promised the future rank of captain on Virage upon completion. Gershom also served on the Cavalier for a short time before being removed from the HSEI. Jessi was on Cavalier for the two years of Virage’s construction. As promised, she was promoted to Captain and given the CO position aboard Virage upon her completion. After a year of service with the ship’s originally assigned XO, Jessi heard that Adin Servaas had been discharged from the UCAS. Jessi immediately requested Adin be moved to serve aboard Virage, and after some string pulling, she replaced the old XO.
Virage made first contact with two species; Kortarl and Lavan. The capital city of ceven's most powerful country was under heavy political unrest when Virage discovered the planet. Their people were poor, while their government was pouring money into space exploration. The space exploration is what caught the eyes of Virage, which got involved, along with the UCAS, in pushing the government out of the capital city. During the conflict Jessi was captured by opfors during a ground operation. She almost lost her right eye in the following torture and interrogation. Freeborn met Baugluicil Mael during the crisis, an excellent pilot who she would later bring to serve aboard Virage.
When the HSEI was absorbed by the UCAS, Virage was docked at Cerbeus Station and has remained there for 2 years undergoing refits. Much of the HSEI crew was transferred off the ship and many new UCAS crew have been brought aboard.
