Griffin Pryce
"Being one of a kind really isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.
(sigh) I hate this. Can someone else talk now?."
- Griffin
Griffin is the only known half-human half-fae in contemporary times. He can pass for human quite easily, and looks much like his mother, Mabyn: the same red hair and his right eye is the same bright blue. His left eye has the flame-like coloration and cat-like pupil of his Fae Draco heritage, but it does keep the general human eye structure of a round cornea. It is usually hidden under a mess of red curls. Hiding his flame-eye is not only about its appearance, it is also very sensitive to light, and the hair coverage helps. His messy curls also hide the pointed shape of his ears, which are rounder than Fae draco ears, but do not quite pass as human. He does not have any trace of Fae draco wings or tail, but he has inherited the ability to breath fire. The exact biological process that allows this is not entirely clear. His fire breath has been observed closely since Griffin first presented the ability as a baby, but not fully examined because neither Mabyn nor Griffin, as he matured, were interested in reaching out to scientific institutes. It never caused any harm to Griffin and, according to a Fae draco observer, seems to function well.
Griffin is an extremely reserved individual. This is more out of habit than anything else, since he grew up with only his mother and Idris as consistent company. This is not to say that his childhood was lonely. He did not meet humans often, but had plenty of magion friends, mostly homoformus Polymorphidae and Gnomidae. But he was always different and felt different. Magions often see him as a symbol of human-magion cooperation, and while this was more evident with his friends' parents than the friends themselves, it could make him uncomfortable. His young friends, on the other hand, were often curious about humans, but he could rarely answer their questions. As he grew, he found that he often preferred being on his own, and came to dislike meeting new persons with whom conversation tended to repeat a pattern of awe at his uniqueness. He can understand these reactions, but that does not make them less awkward or frustrating for him.
He has very little experience with humans, and most of his knowledge about human cultures is from reading, movies, television and his mother. There was no real option for him to go to school or anything of the like without his magical heritage being revealed. Mabyn was extremely protective of him as a child, her experience with her parents making her hyper-vigilant. As a teen he did get some opportunities to meet and mingle with humans. However, he found the constant need to hide things or outright lie about himself overly frustrating. Kas and Dan Geist are Griffin's first real human friends (while they are technically magic-folk, the twins grew up in human society with no knowledge of magic, so culturally they are very much humans). He found immediate affinity with Kas, who manages human society even though his abilities and appearance set him apart. Their reserved and quiet personalities match well, and they quickly became good friends. Griffin still finds Dan a little perplexing at times, he likes her honest directness, but can clash with her extrovert personality.
Per his request, Mabyn let Griffin accompny her on fieldwork since he was sixteen, providing it was not dangerous (and that he felt like it). Taking into account his experience, and unique conditions, when the Magiontology Society was established he was officially named as an agent, albeit his young age.
