Black Dawn Kings' Memorial

Ecosystem

Outside of the sepulcher's vicinity, the ground and soil is feeling ashen and devoid of nutriments. Outside of very rare rodents and decompositing organism that travels by, the place feels like a barren land. Above it, a large dead tree hunk towers in the middle of the barrens.

Ecosystem Cycles

As surprising as it may seems, the laments on the sepulcher and barrens above grow silent when winter takes hold, as less living matter venture closer to nourish him, but also the beetles below which the frost makes them catatonic, forbidden them to move and continue to eat the King.

Localized Phenomena

Many natives refuses to go nearby the barrens above the sepulcher for saying it is owned by the dead who you can hear them lament.   This is directly caused by the memorial below, as the cursed king manages to connect to nearby roots in some sort of parasitic happening. This made the essence of the cursed king affect the deeproots connected to him, making a deadman's tree out of it. the large roots also manage to leave tiny bits of air pockets and tunnels go our of the tree from the soil. When it happens for the cursed king to moan in lament, the sound reverbates to the surface, which is what the living creatures hears.

Fauna & Flora

Very few flora goes around the sepulcher, outside of some grave moss and deeproots.   As for fauna, only worms, as little burrower critters populate the vicinity along which a unique type of beetles that developped quite a taste of flesh, be it rotten or fresh. those beetles attained a state of undeath over time from repeatedly eating the regenerating but cursed flesh of the cursed king, along with some rare raiders that would not know their aversion to light.

Natural Resources

While worked in some way, the sepulcher has lining of gold inside it's inscribed walls both telling of warnings and feats of ancient kings. The stonework is also rather impressive and show very few sign of wearing over the centuries.

History

Upon the crowning of the region's second Serpentfolk King Seshikath, back in era (), contacted the gods to receive success and strength to continue ruling the region. The god (deity) allowed him his request upon one condition: that in due time, he would claim his soul. Seshikath accepted without much second tought. The god gave him an hourglass and announced he would take him once the hourglass is removed.   His reign continued to be strong, ruling with an iron gauntlet and scaring the nearby regions of his power. But as it had to come, the hourglass came soon to fruition and payment was due. However, Seshikath tried to dupe the god by conducting a foul ritual of necromancy to prolong his life into undeath. With the help of many serpentfolk cultists and scholars of forbidden arts, Seshikath managed to achieve immortality, becoming an undead while still keeping his tainted soul within. At first, he became content, but the god wasn't without ressources: he actually had a double agent inside the cultist which added his own blood inside the ritual which tainted the sepulchre. This allowed the god to seal the sepulchre, forbidding the King to never leaves the place ever again. The King, spouting infamies at the god that put retribution on him, soon succumbed to hunger and started devouring the cultists trapped with him. The rest of them that were outside the sepulchre closed and locked the sepulchre with additional rituals.   It was then that the god put a inquisitive order on the survivors: that if they were the gain back the favor of the gods, that every new king must offer his service in the afterlife to them for if they not, damnation shall meet all that followed his steps, and that Seshikath would remain trapped and sealed by the life force of his followers, remaining as a grim reminder.   9 Kings followed the ruling and were buried into unique tombs nearby the sealed room of Seshikath. Since now, no more Kings followed as the serpentfolks around were qiped out during a bloody war.

Trying to scam the gods never ends well - and this sepulcher is a wonderful (or awful, I suppose, if you're the king in question) example of it!   Without the serpentfolk kings to serve him, does the deity take his payment in other ways? Was it ever tradition, for a time, for the new kings to make a pilgrimage here to see the results firsthand, and learn the consequences for such actions?   Either way, definitely something to give anyone goosebumps :)

that is a good question ! The place would have remained lost in time. The seal would probably be weakened a little from so much time, but the spirits of the following Kings are still keeping a watch unbeknowst to most. But it could be a good deity detail about the pilgrimage and edicts to follow from them. I am heavily considering a deity article to come because of it.   Thanks for the comment and happy summercamp !
