Ancient Volcanic Ridge

A line of active volcanos along an active tectonic fold. Three of those reach out over the ocean's surface. The magma upwelling at the fold provides the shelf area with diffrent nurients and heat out of the black and white smokers along the fold. The active volcanos pump greenhouse gases and ash into the atmosphere, leading to clouds and acidic rain as well as blocking of sunlight.

Ecosystem

The upwelling of magma along the fold makes for a harsh, but habitable environment. The black and white smokers provide energy and diffrent minerals like iron and sulfur, as well as carbonmonxide and nitrogen, on which the early fauna of Corticeans feed. The pockets of hot water within the young basalt provide safe spaces in which abiogenesis continously puts out new forms of bio-molecules, some of which appear to be more resistant to the envronment and are able to sustain themselves. RNA- and DNA-based life exists side by side in this dark, hot and highly acidic environment and slowly changes the chemistry of their little pockets.
