Southern Coast Colonies

Inspired by Wizards of the Coast's Ghosts of Saltmarsh.
The Southern Coast Colonies of the Empire of Keoland are a series of colonial towns ruled by a Governor in Seaton. While far too cold to be a productive agricultrual colony, they export a vareity of furs, timber, and other natural resources to the Keoish heartland. Recently the crown has begun looking into mining operations in the area with the establishment of the Saltmarsh Mining Company.

Demographics

The Southern Coast Colonies are populated by mostly Human and Dwarf settlers in the large cities - mostly Raanite and Keoish people respectively - with native Tənas Palach Littlefolk and Elves in the scattered remnants of their once-flourishing civilization.

Government

Ultimately ruled by the Empire of Keoland, the Southern Coast Colonies are ruled by a Duke (who also rules Seaton) with each individual settlement having it's own government. Most of these townships, such as Saltmarsh, have a town council and town guard. The council is typically elected from the populace while the guard is an extension of the Keoish Military. Tənas Palach settlements have a more socially stratified system of governance, with chiefs and nobles ruling peasants and slaves. Some colonial settlements are also operated via a feudal system, but that system of social organization is largely confined to the heartland and surrounding regions of the empire.

Industry & Trade

The Southern Coast Colonies produce raw materials, including timber and furs, that they export to the heartland. Meanwhile, manufactured goods are imported to the colonies. Most agricultral goods are either imported or made locally, with few-to-none exported. Most trade is conducted via rivers and the Cobalt Sea, with fishing being another primary industry.

The colonials do trade with the jan pana as well, as the littlefolk are espeically entrenched in the fur trade. This system allows the colonial settlements to stay seaside, while the remaining jan pana populations live within more inland forests such as the Silverstand and Dreadwood.
