Kingdom on the Brink - Session 54
General Summary
The party loots the bodies, Del Varis gets some alchemical vials off the dead Alchemical Archer and Merigold inspects the Herald of Blood. Merigold notices that the Herald looks like it was humanoid at one point. The party moves on, they aren't being sneaky, they hear shouting and the sounds of combat, they run towards the sounds of combat. The party sees two Ourobans, a Herald of Fire, an Archmage, and a Harbinger; they have a gnome blocked in. The party gets the drop on the enemy group, Duromar uses the scatter spell and the party closes the gap quickly. Rosemary goes around and casts sanctuary on the gnome, Del Varis moves up and stuns the Harbinger, Rosemary casts sacred flame on the Ouroban. Uriel moves up and upcasts hold person on three of the enemies, the Archmage tries to counterspell it but Duromar counters that, Uriel manages to paralyze the Ouroban. Gareth moves up and critically strikes the Ouroban several times, the Archmage casts wall of force, the Herald of Fire attempts to hit Bob with a fire claw. The un-stunned Ouroban uses its devastate ability and lands two devastating strikes on Uriel, Duromar casts steel wind strike that crits two of the enemies. The Harbinger remains stunned for the rest of the combat, the Herald of Fire uses its legendary action to uses immolate on which engulfs Gareth, Duromar, and Del Varis. Gregori charges up with Merigold and they seriously damage the Ouroban, the gnome runs behind Rosemary and they teleport out of the melee. Merigold runs around the wall of force and attacks the Archmage, destroying the mirror images around him. Uriel strikes the Archmage, Del Varis moves around the wall of force and stuns the Archmage, dropping the wall of force. The Herald of Fire attempts to strike Bob, but misses, the gnome starts to shoot eldritch blasts at the Ouroban. The Herald of Fire shoots a fiery lance which hits Duromar and Merigold, leaving them barely up. The Ouroban uses its abyssal flames and lightly sears the party, leaving Uriel poisoned, it proves to not be enough as Duromar uses steelwind strike and The rest of the party moves in and quickly strike down the last of the enemies. The party begins to short rest.
Uriel scouts the area for more enemies, Duromar starts to inspect the ritual glyphs, Del Varis heals Duromar, Merigold and Gareth loot the bodies. Rosemary checks on the gnome, who thanks her, Uriel begins to check the bodies and see that they have tattoos of the black dragon (though they appear to be scarred and or covered up). Uriel starts to talk to the gnome and finds out her name is Amber Kerogen, together they start to behead the corpses and put them on pikes (Amber seems pretty OK with this). Duromar finds out the glyphs are an animating ritual (most likely used to make the Wickermen they fought earlier). Amber seems somewhat apprehensive in sharing details, but Uriel is able to start to gain her trust, finding out her memory is fractured. She remembers cultists in her village, buildings burning and slain bodies all around her, they were chanting "Gnomebreaker." Del Varis wants to destroy the ritual circle and starts to take out some alchemical fire, Gareth positions an oil barrel, Uriel sarcastically says Del Varis should juggle the alchemical fire. Del Varis thinks that's a good idea (for some reason), he throws them in the air, and they fall on him and explode in his face (fortunately missing the barrel of oil). Amber looks over and sees Del Varis and approaches him, it takes Del Varis a few seconds but he recognizes her as the person he helped heal who was running away from the Leagallow thugs (Kingdom on the Brink - Session 48). Amber says she should thank him again, Del Varis asks if she's alright, Merigold sees this interaction and remembers the conversation she had with Del Varis in the market, Merigold asks if Amber knows Kellan Leagallow and describes him. Amber thinks for a moment and says she has vague memories of fighting someone by that description, Merigold then pulls out a locket and shows her a picture of her kidnapped wife. Amber says that she looks familiar, but once again her memory is fractured, she talks about how the cult has been after her and remembers rituals and experiments being conducted on her. Amber helps the party recover faster by casting catnap on a few of them. The party says they are no friends of these cultists and offer to let her travel with them, Amber accepts the offer.
The party continues on to Bronze Cliff over the next few days, being relatively uneventful, they notice a group of people off to the side of the road. Uriel and Duromar approaches the group, they seem well armed (comprised of a Champion, Blackguard, War Priest, Evoker, and Abjurer), Duromar asks about the road ahead and the group says it isn't too bad. The armed group asks if they have seen the people on the wanted poster (The old party during the Aramore battle Kingdom on the Brink - Session 33). Duromar says Runsha is dead and doesn't know about the rest of the group (Gareth puts up his cloak of elvenkind). The armed group talks about how that's one traitor down, Duromar stops and dismounts his horse, forcefully saying they should respect to the dead heir of House Valeros. The armed group says that according to the Arbitors Runsha and his associates have committed treason, heresy, murdered several nobles, and attempted to carve out Eastbrook as a separate kingdom. This infuriates Duromar, Gareth attempts to speak reason to Duromar, Uriel helps him saying "Runsha wasn't a traitor as he was reporting to lord Bridgeford." The armed group says that the Arbitor Reinoldus says otherwise, the exchange continues to remain tense, unknown to anybody Del Varis decides to sneak around and then throws a dagger with an alchemical vial attached at the Blackguard, setting him on fire (Del Varis didn't appreciate Duromar being insulted). The party is able to react quicker, and they land several critical strikes on the Blackguard and Champion, Amber casts greater invisibility on Uriel. Several spells get thrown around but most are counter-spelled, Duromar casts haste and Rosemary embolden bonds the group. Merigold trips the Champion and Gareth lands several strikes on him; the Blackguard continues to burn and strikes Duromar several times. Uriel strikes the War Priest and smites him, the War Priest casts spirit guardians which effects Merigold, the Evoker moves and casts cone of cold which hits everyone but Rosemary and Del Varis (and sculpts around her allies). The Abjurer attempts to banish Duromar but he saves, Duromar casts steelwind strike and kills the Blackguard and Champion, the Abjurer use an arcane ward which takes all the damage. Del Varis moves up and stuns the War Priest (dropping spirit guardians) and punches the Evoker several times. The party quickly overwhelms the Evoker and War Priest, the Abjurer tries to teleport but Uriel counterspells it. The Abjurer falls shortly thereafter.
The party loots the bodies and find several empty vials of oil of Sharpness and giant strength, they stake the bodies and Duromar has Del Varis write a sign that says "this is what happens to enemies of House Bridgeford." Merigold finds several pieces of parchment, some wanted posters and official decrees with the Arbitors seal outlining the charges against the old party. Uriel sees Rosemary sitting on a rock and says that this is necessary, we won't mutilate anymore but the fighting will get worse. The party continues for a few more days when they run across several burned and broken wagons, they salvage some food, but it doesn't look like acts of banditry. They see the seals of House Boriz, Broadbow, Yinric, Valeros among the dead, it seems the attack was done to send a message to them. Uriel says that these are acts of terror to try and convince those to not fight, he's seen it done between kingdoms, but not within a kingdom interior (probably explains the food shortages). The party reaches the outskirts of Bronze Cliff.
