Session 064 - Escaping the Mines of Death

General Summary

16^th to 23^rd Larane (5) (Summer) 721TR

The story so far

Avon is a member of the elite Red Guard Legion and specializes in interrogation and intelligence gathering. He is often used to evaluate potential threats to the Thardic Republic.

He has been ordered to investigate the Company of Dead Men, a large mercenary band who has been acting suspiciously. The Company, under the direction of evil Priests of Morgath, is mounting an expedition to recover a powerful and evil artifact from the Izora Mines. They are assisted by a small band of Dwarven criminals.

Avon has found this artifact, retrieved it, and fled with the Company and Dwarves in close pursuit. He has temporarily trapped them in the treasure vault, but for how long?

Part 1 - Escape Up

Adela, Priestess of Morgath

The party makes its way upstairs through the secret passages and the Mines' entrance located behind the waterfall.

Waiting for them are three Huge Zombies, the animated Ogres that they had killed on their way down the mine shafts. They prove strong, robust opponents. Then from the mineshaft above, they hear the Priestess Adela working magic. She summons a huge sticky Web. However, the heroes avoid or break free of the entanglement. Avon is caught by a Telekinetic Attack, raised off the ground, and moved within the Undead's striking range.

Part 2 - Angi to the Rescue

Angi, the Rock Giant

The Undead smashes into the badly injured heroes, and then Angi the Rock Giant appears from the walls with two animated boulders and attacks. Sabretooth Ivashu Companion Smeg arrives as well and is sent up the mine shaft to hunt down Adela.

Eventually, the Undead are bashed or hacked to pieces. Agni grabs Sabretooth starts climbing up the Mine Shaft. Before Sabretooth can attack, Adela assaults Smeg with a spell knocking him out, but rather than falling to his death, Sabretooth manages to catch him. Adela telekinetically raises Avon high in the air then releases him, but he rolls as he lands, reducing the impact. She then Dimension Doors to another location after summoning Giant Spiders to attack Angi and Sabretooth. Angi is wrapped securely in webs and set upon by the spiders.

Part 3 - Adela's Secret Identity

Avon and Acheron rush up the Mineshaft while Angi is hammered by repeated magic attacks and spider bites to near death. Spotting Adela, they strike and breaking her concentration on her spell, and the spiders disappear. Even so, she severely wounds Acheron with life-draining and mental attacks.

She once again Dimension Doors out of the fight to the entrance of the Mine. However, Sabretooth is nearby and grapples her. Being so close to her, he spots strange inconsistencies. She has an illusionary form, and he sees through the magical disguise. She is the Dark Elf Elexiendra, of which the party was warned of previously.

As Avon and Acheron arrive, she psychically overwhelms Sabretooth, disabling him. But just before she was about to strike again or maybe escape, Angi's animated boulders smash onto her, instantly killing her.

Part 4 - Flooding the Vault Chambers

The Heroes meet with Angi in the caverns. He is planning to leave the Mine and find a community of Hru somewhere else in the mountains. He gifts Sabertooth with a magical stone Hru figurine, one created by the Blind Priest of Ilvir Farengen who visited about ten years ago.

Hru Statuette

Appearance: A 1ft tall statuette in the shape of Rock Giant emerging from rocks, carved from red-brown and grey granite. Weighs 5 lb.

Infusion: You can step into stone or rocks as per the Meld into Stone spell except you have full uses of your senses while in the rocks

Duration: The person attuned rolls d20 for the number of infusion points when attuning. 1 infusion point is consumed per use.

Before he leaves, he manipulates the rocks around the waterfall, permanently diverting some of the water flooding the caverns and vaults below. Hopefully, this should drown the remaining Dwarven Criminals, Quartermaster Mauger, and the remaining Company of Dead Men trapped in the vault below.

Part 5 - Back to the Camp

At the Company of Dead Men Camp, the remaining guards and scouts are dead, killed by arrows. The Elf Eldashara is waiting or them.

Eldashara

Eldashara is pleased by the heroes' efforts retrieving the Artifact, dealing with the Priests of Morgath and especially the Dark Elf Elexiendra. He explains he is a member of the Nithra-Dante an ancient organization dedicated to protecting Humanity from the ancient evil, the Morsindari, or Dark Elves.

He also informs Avon that the founder of the Nithra-Dante, Pengellaure, is an ancient Elf who is infamous among the Elven Kingdom for being a philanderer. He is said to have numerous relationships with humans women over the centuries and resulting in many offspring. Eldashara thinks Avon could well be one of his progeny. He agrees to pass on Avon's request to meet.

After looting the camp, Eldashara escorts the party back to the Thardic Republic, avoiding potential threats such as Barbarians, Orcs, and Bandits.

Aftermath

The party returns to the City of Coranan.

The Artifact is taken to the Temple of Larani and stored in a vault under guard. Acheron plans to take this to his Order's Headquarters to get it exorcised or destroyed.

Avon reports back to the Commander of the Red Guard Azikain Gelber. The Commander is pleased with his effort, and his status in the Legion is enhanced. He learns that the Company of Dead Men has transported hundreds of dead bodies to the cities Church of Morgath over the last month. Now the majority of their forces have left the city returning to the Kingdom of Rethem.
