The story so far

Acheron is a member of the Argent Order and needs to complete his quest to deliver a collection of magical Silver Swords to the Abbey of St Andrada.

The continuation of Session 116 - Ghost Ship.

Location - At Sea in the Gulf of Chakro and the East Coast of the Kingdom of Kanday.

Part 1 - The Sea.

The Heroes decide to keep the coast in sight, sail West with Avon controlling the rudder and Acheron, assisted by Azemer, set the sails. The journey is painfully slow as the characters attempt to learn how to perform the basic functions of sailing a medium-sized merchant vessel. They narrowly avoid being beached by a freak wind blast and have to put out two fires.

Part 2 - Bats Out of Hell.

On the second night, while Azermer is on watch, the Sparrow is attacked by three giant albino bats, a.k.a Morgath's Spawn. Azemer is grappled by one, and the other two begin wreaking the Sparrow. They immediately stop damaging the ship and attack Avon and Acheron when they arrive on the deck. These characters note the bat's attacks are particularly vicious as if the bats had a personal dislike for both Avon and Acheron.

Eventually, the against bats are killed, although Avon and Azermer are severely injured. Acheron knows that these bats are monstrous creations of the Church of Morgath and wonders how they found the Heroes at sea. He considers the possibility that maybe this was Azermar's doing.

Part 3 - Pirates.

The Sparrow makes little progress over the next two days despite reasonable winds. On the second night on two small boats, a party of eight pirates attempts to sneak aboard. Avon quickly spots them, wakes the crew, and kills one at range. The Pirates are easily dealt with and the last Pirate standing is convinced to surrender.

This foreign sailor is Sagar, originating from one of the Korlic States on the Hepekerian subcontinent, quickly come up with an unconvincing explanation of why he attacked the Sparrow. He decides to join the crew in return for his life.

The next day the Sparrow sets sail, with Sagar's assistance. His skill is invaluable as only his knowledge helps the Sparrow escape a tidal bore. The Sparrow makes it in one piece to Aleath just before sundown and the Harbourmaster sends a pilot to guide the vessel into the port.

Location - City of Aleath in the Kingdom of Kanday.

The owner of the Sparrow, Chaiso Afkai, is quickly located. This man is a wealthy Mercantlyer, City Alderman, and the Guildmaster of the Mercantylers Guild. Avon skillfully negotiated a favorable salvage fee and developed a good rapport with this influential man. The party is quickly paid a significant sum.

Sagar the Pirate gets work as a longshoreman and agrees to help Avon in the future.

Location - Abbey of St Andrada, in the Hamlet of Kostim.

Part 4 - End of a Long Mission.

Father Chavoshka, by Artbreeder
Acheron finally returns to the Abbey of St Andrada in the Hamlet of Kostim.

Father Chavoshka, the head of his Order, is pleased to see Acheron safely return, with the new recruit Azermar and the Silver Swords crafted by the Dwarven weaponcrafter Kirinza Hazadul. He has heard nothing but positive reports from the Laranian Primate regarding Acheron's activities. Acheron also donates a large portion of his salvage fee to the Order. Acheron spends the next few days in training and reflection.

When asked if the Order would be able to assist Avon in his plans to join the Thardic Senate. Father Chavoshka comments that the Order has little political sway in the Thardic Republic, but may able to influence the votes of several devout Senators.

Regarding the Giant Bats, Father Chavoshka deduces that the Church of Morgath must be using the blood the Heroes used to write their names in the book, the Chronicle of the Dead Men, to track them (refer Session 059 - The Company of Dead Men). Although destroying that book must be a priority, the Order has a more pressing mission for Acheron.

Salvage Rights

The law of salvage is a principle of maritime law that is very loosely enforced.

If the person recovers another person's ship or cargo at sea, they are entitled to a reward commensurate with the value of the property saved. Generally, this is 30 to 50% of the value of the cargo or ship. After being contacted, the owner has 90 days to pay this sum to the person recovering the goods. If they decline or cannot, the goods now belong to the person who recovered them.
