Session 061 - Plots, Mines and Fighting Dirty

General Summary

9^th to 15^th Larane (5) (Summer) 721TR

The story so far

Avon is a member of the Elite Red Guard, who specializes in interrogation and intelligence gathering. He is often used to evaluate potential threats to the Thardic Republic.

He has been ordered to investigate The Company of Dead Men, a large mercenary band closely associated with the Church of Morgath, who are acting suspiciously. Avon, aided by his friends, has infiltrated the Company as posing recruits.

The Company, aided by a small band of Dwarven criminals, is mounting an expedition into the wilderness to recover some powerful and evil artifact hidden in the distant Izora Mines.

The heroes are also made contacts with an Elven warrior Eldashara, who is also planning to stop this expedition.

Part 1 - Sabretooth the Groin Buster

Sabretooth has a plan to teach the sadistic Sergeant Argonery a painful lesson. When scouting, he gathers a few bushels of the Dragonhead Plant. This brightly flowered herb is easy to find in Summer, and he carefully rubs its sharp leaves over his groin area, and it quickly goes numb.

Next, he bets two months pay with the Quartermaster Mauger that he can convince Sergeant Argoney to let him kick him in the balls. Then he challenges the Sergeant to such a contest. Each would take turns to kick each other in the groin until the other passes out or surrenderers. Helped by the Anesthetic herbs, Sabretooth narrowly wins, much to the amusement of the rest of the Company. Yet again, the Sergeant has been successfully undermined, this time in front of the Company Leadership.

Part 2 - The Barbarians

The next day the party is instructed to kill or get rid of a band of Kabloqui Barbarians who are lurking nearby. This group of ten warriors is talking around a campfire among various piles of Animal, Orc and Human skulls.

Sabretooth sends his Ivashu Ivashu Companion Smeg forward to distract them or maybe divert some away. Unfortunately, the barbarians are not hostile and are in a particularly good mood. Seeing the ugly Smeg only causes amusement and curiosity. Eventually, Smeg acts so obnoxious one of the Barbarians takes a swipe at him. Badly injured, Smeg plays dead.

The barbarians spot the party and are tricked into attacking. They have numbers on their side but are beaten by the better-armed characters, with only one escaping. The party cuts the heads off the dead as an example to other tribesmen, and also so the Priests of Morgath cannot animate them.

Back at camp, the heroes are praised by the Quartermaster for their ruthless efficiency.

Part 3 - The Attack

The next day, the wagon train is again ambushed by the Elf Eldashara. He kills two guards with his precise archery, and likely one of the Priest of Morgath, although Acheron discretely finishes him off.

Another Priest of Morgath looks somewhat suspicious, very pale, and face almost always hidden under the hood of his robe. Avon notes that his flesh looks dead, and Acheron later senses that he is undead and moderately powerful.

Eldashara again quickly escapes his pursuers. Later that night, Acheron secretly meets with him in the woods. He plans to next attack the expeditions camp after they have arrived at the Mine and started exploring.

Part 4 - The New Sergeant

During the last few days of travel, the party continues to undermine Sergeant Argonay with much success. The men are starting to see Avon and the Squads' natural leader. Eventually, Quartermaster Mauger summons Avon to his tent, noting that Avon has military experience. He offers Avon the Sergeant's position as Argonary is not performing as expected. Avon accepts and puts on a display of confidence and competence that have the former sergeant is hesitant to challenge the decision, but he is furious. Avon gives Argonery the rank of Corporal.

A day from arriving at the Izora mines, the newly promoted Sergeant Avon attended a conference with the remaining Priests of Morgath, the Dwarves, and the Quartermaster. He learns.

Adela, Priestess of Morgath

The Church of Morgath is planning to recover the Artifact, an evil soul-stealing sword, and give it to a General. The General will then be corrupted and start a war with the nearby Kingdoms. From the chaos of war, a New Order will arise.

Avon and any who help in this endeavor will be rewarded senior positions in the Theocracy to come.

The sword is somewhere in the Izora Mine in a hidden chamber, which can most easily be accessed by the Dwarven members of the expedition. The Morgathic Priestess Adela has scryed into the mine and found that it is filled with Orcs, Ogres, and Rock Giants.

Part 4 - The Mine

The upper levels of the mine are indeed filled with Orcs. Avon leads the PCs and the remaining members of his squad, including Corporal Argonery, into the assault. Several of his men fall, but the Orcs are defeated. Many are thrown down the shaft by Sabretooth.
