Chem Chua
Long ago, Chem’s ancestor, Kim Chua, a voyager and navigator, sailed westward from T’u Lung, on the continent of Kara-Tur, along the southern coast to Faerûn until reaching the western shores of the Sword Coast. Before the trade fleet could reach the port city of Waterdeep, a storm rolled in and did a number on their ships. Kim’s ship was scuttled and while she was pulled from the briny seas by another ship, she’d been injured in the wreckage. In Waterdeep, she met a young apothecary and acolyte of the temple of Oghma, who tended to her injuries, Benn Eramus. They would fall in love and raise a family that would grow and travel up and down the coast over the generations.
Chem Eramus-Chua, the middle of five children, was born to a crafting family living in Daggerford. Strong from a youth of helping his parents with their work, as a young adult, Chem joined the Daggerford city guard. Some years later, word of Mythrite and its opportunities spread, pushing Chem and his younger sister, Hym Erasmus-Chua, to make the hard decision to leave their family and journey east to the growing town. Chem served as a caravan guard on the journey and as they were en route, the caravan was attacked by raiders and his sister was injured. In a fury, Chem pursued the raid leader, who fled the battle back into the wilds. Days later, Chem returned to the caravan, scarred and dirty, with the head of the raid leader. One of the caravan travelers, a genderfluid dwarven noble by the name of “Gelda Halfhammer” took notice and sung praises of his tenacity to Mythrite’s “Master of the Guard”. For this, Chem was eventually hired to caravans protecting the loads of metals brought up from the nearby mines. The mithral trade, being as valuable as it is, forged Chem into an unrelenting and merciless guardian of these goods, as them falling into the wrong hands could lead to severe consequences for him and those that served in the guard. The job itself is more rewarding than your standard town guard position, as it requires greater expertise and a higher rate of success. The extra pay also helped him clear any debts for his sister's care and healing.
A stranger might think him needlessly cruel for dispatching raiders and thieves without hesitation, but his fellow caravan guards are quietly grateful and understanding, though they also give him his space. For the safety of his guard and his own livelihood, he does what has to. Many of the miners and guards sow tales of Chem's feats around their campfires, sometimes hearing Chem chuckle from nearby if he overhears.
Outside of his usual work, Chem throws himself into quieter, softer hobbies that most of his fellow guards know nothing of, such as woodworking and painting. He loves small animals and owns a loyal pet ferret named "Kiki". He’s also sweet on one of his fellow caravan guards, Keiran V’Lora, an older and surprisingly gruff half-elf man and a seasoned ranger. The two often spend their downtime together between escorts. One day, he hopes to build, paint, and sell furniture from his own shop in Mythrite with Hym and Keiran."
