Marachar Gardner
Town Guard Marachar Gardner never met a sausage he wouldn’t eat, a puppy he wouldn’t pet or a “pull my finger” joke he wouldn’t tell. He enjoys gently mocking people in power and will often challenge others to contests that he knows he can’t win or deliberately lose at games of chance so that he can publicly burst into tears and make his opponents immediately regret their easy victory over someone small. Marachar has a strong sense of justice and he does not believe in “punching down,” though, short as he is, it’s hardly ever an issue so long as his opponent is still conscious. He also cannot resist a practical joke and this is the reason that he was forced to flee his native city of Neverwinter, as not everyone is able to tolerate being the subject of humor—or the target of a justifiable mooning. He has held nearly every job there is and been fired from every single one—usually for lacking decorum.
Marachar did not journey to Mythrite alone, he fled with his husband, Tikwik Frappideep a lithe blond gnome who once made his living doing sleight of hand magic on the streets of Neverwinter, but now creates and maintains clockwork items for the Lord’s Alliance. He and Marachar were accompanied to Mythrite by Tikwik’s ancient mother, Flimiglass, and the three of them now reside in the Halberd under the back stairs of a dwarf-run boarding house called the Miner’s Toe.
Marachar met Tikwik after a humorless dragonborn threw him down what appeared to be a well. The circle of stones actually hid the entrance to the Frappideep family warren where Marachar quickly charmed Tikwik with his relaxed good nature and his inspired (though transparent) ruse that the fall caused an “acutely discombobulated funny bone” that prevented his departure from the Frappideep residence for four solid weeks.
As a town guard, Marachar prides himself on his fairness to everyone and his willingness to listen to any side of a story, no matter how long or convoluted or fictional. He believes that all people are innocent until proven guilty and that probably many of the guilty are innocent as well, when viewed from their own perspective. He enjoys that society in Mythrite is less structured than in other places and sees the near-chaos as an opportunity for the little guys to finally get ahead.
He and Tikwik dream of having their own hole in the ground someday as well as a theater where Tikwik can go back to performing his feats of marvelous mystery. To this end, Marachar will often take dubious side jobs to supplement his income. He does not accept bribes, but is willing to be distracted by gifts that may have been dropped near him by the wrongfully accused—to do otherwise would be rude. His preferred weapons are the slingshot and the zinger.
