Oda Rirgelo
If the population of Mythrite can be envisioned as moths flocking to the flame of promised riches, then Oda Rirgelo is a passing beetle caught in the swarm. She carries no aspirations of finding her fortune in the boomtown. Frankly, Oda has few burning hopes at all, at least not ones that stretch further than the day-by-day limits of her imagination. But her wife’s younger brother was one of the first to settle in Mythrite, and when he asked Oda and his sister to join him, she packed up with little complaint or contemplation. Forethought and ambition mean little to her, but she holds her family dear.
As a Glass Merchant, Oda was able to fill a niche in Mythrite’s growing economy. While business in the community isn’t much better than it was in her old hometown, it certainly isn’t worse, and that’s enough for her. Despite managing most aspects of the small glass shop, she doesn’t have much of a head for business. When left on her own the older woman displays a carelessness that could easily spell ruin for the shop. Thankfully, her wife Lanor is much more sensible and quietly advises Oda in addition to keeping the accounts. Recently the two women have begun seeking an apprentice to assist them, so they can spend more time with Lanor’s brother and his family.
The Rirgelos aren’t rich by any measure, but they never have to worry about where their next meal is coming from. Most of their wares are purchased from glassmakers in the city and sold to upper or middle-class residents, many of whom live in Eronia alongside the Rirgelos. The civil, moderate social sphere of “little Charlamaine” suits Oda nicely.
Oda cuts a fairly imposing figure, with a tall, stocky frame. Her greying hair is long and usually worn loose, falling in waves across the deep brown of her skin. She keeps her appearance and her shop alike tidy.
While Oda is isolated from much of the tension in Mythrite by her homogenous social bubble, composed primarily of other middle-class human merchants, she has a strong stake in the class divisions that run through the town. Her frequent interactions with Guild service workers (particularly the glassmakers who supply her wares) involve little respect on either side. As a relative newcomer to the town, Oda suspects that her suppliers are searching for an opportunity to take advantage of her unsteady foothold in the market. She’s determined to show them that she deserves a life of contentment in Mythrite as much as anyone else.
