Stamp Mill and Refinery

The Stamp Mill and Refinery is located south of the town's main gate on the main road into the settlement, situated between Charlamaine Hill to the west and the residential area to the east. Carts with the day's haul from the mountain roll down the main road to unload their ores for processing.   The Stamp Mill and Refinery is a covered but wallless facility. Stamp mills are large contraptions that drop an enormous weight on material, crushing it into smaller bits for further processing. The rest of the space is the refinery, with stations for crushing, grinding, and washing material to separate rock from the valuable ore. Miners can either pay a fee to rent access to the machinery and equipment or they can pay a service fee to have the refining done for them. Ores are generally reshaped into standard sizes for easier shipping and then brought to the Guild services for craftspeople to get first dibs or straight to the Waterfront District for export back to civilization.   Coal and iron ore are the most common materials brought to the refinery even though they bring little profit. Other metals, stone, chalk, and other common materials would result in a negligible profit, or even a deficit, for a hardworking miner. Precious metals such as gold and silver bring a heftier return and gemstones, platinum, mithril, and adamantium all being quite lucrative. The vast majority of miners extract enough to stay afloat financially, but only just. Most miners will find a small pocket of mithril that can cover a month or two of bills but not much more. There have been enough lodes and sizeable veins discovered that make a miner rich overnight that it keeps most miners going.   Many miners sourly note that on most days, the lords of Charlemaine Hill will stand atop their balconies in their fine clothes looking down on the dirty, exhausted miners as they file back into town after a day's taxing labor while making mental calculations of the likely return of each cart. Messengers run between the Stamp Mill and Refinery and offices in the Professional Services district and to private homes in Charlemaine hill reporting results of each cart to interested parties.
