Varkath Flame-Tongue
Varkath Flame-Tongue
Red Dragonborn warrior who once fought for Northlander clans on the isle of Llywelyn. Varkath’s arrival in Llywelyn is said to have occurred during a time of great upheaval. The Northlanders were engaged in a series of brutal conflicts between the jarls, and their settlements were constantly under siege. Varkath, hearing of their plight, offered his aid in exchange for a place among their ranks. Despite initial mistrust—red dragonborn were rarely seen in the Isles, and Varkath’s fiery breath and scaled visage unnerved even the most seasoned Northlander warriors—he quickly proved his worth on the battlefield.
With a spear made from dragonbone and tipped with an obsidian blade, Varkath fought with an intensity and fury that was unmatched. Legends say that in one pivotal battle, he stood alone on a cliffside, holding off an entire wave of enemy raiders while his Northlander allies regrouped. He wielded his spear, Blazeheart, like an extension of his own spirit, and his breath weapon incinerated foes, leaving only ashes in his wake. After that battle, the Northlanders affectionately dubbed him Flame-Tongue, a name that would live on in songs and sagas for generations.
Varkath became a trusted advisor to the Northlander chieftains, and his strategies were as invaluable as his strength. He taught the Northlanders techniques inspired by his draconic heritage, particularly in forging weapons and armor that could withstand both the cold and the heat of battle. In return, the Northlanders welcomed him as one of their own, and he even took part in their rituals and feasts, earning the friendship and loyalty of those who fought alongside him.
As Varkath aged, he began to speak of a final resting place where he wished to be laid to rest, away from the reach of enemies and the wear of time. He described a hidden glen on the Isle of Llywelyn, where he claimed to have seen an ancient cairn—a site he believed to be a nexus of power. Varkath prophesied that the place held a connection to both the Northlanders’ gods and his own dragon spirits, and he declared that he would journey there when his time came.
When Varkath eventually fell in battle, mortally wounded while defending a Northlander settlement, his friends and comrades honored his wish. A select group of warriors carried his body to the secret glen, where they raised a cairn over his remains, interring him with his spear, Blazeheart, and a few of his most treasured possessions. They left no markers, as per his instructions, believing that the power of the place would protect his resting place.
There are still those on Llywelyn who treat his story as a heroic legend. Ivar from the village of Hofsa told Tiarjead about Varkath's story.
