Planktown is a coastal city along the
Gray Bay . At first only the underwater Depths portion of the city existed, being founded by a huge colony of corals buildling a reef along the Bay. Over time, a lot of marine species migrated into the Depths, taking advantage of the naturally plankton-rich water, leading to the town's name. The Five sunk their hooks into the town early, taking over quite quickly and forcing the locals to give up part of their plankton and other resources. Backed by the Wave Cleaners as enforcers, nobody could stand up to them and survive. The town's fortune quickly turned around, however, with the coming of the
Lord of the Depth's.
Dreary Beginnings
The Five ruled Planktown through fear and exploitation. The Wave Cleaners would go around and collect protection tax from everyone, usually in significant amounts of plankton. This caused a shortage of food and resources amongst the town's denizens, drastically reducing growth until it got to a standstill, while the Five grew rich. Even the Wave Cleaners were paid in very little plankton, just enough to be more than what most families had left after the taxes, keeping them loyal for most of the first decade of the town's existence. The corals paid no mind, as most of the town was built surrounding their Reef to ensure the corals got plenty of sunlight.
A few years into this,
Sayyid Klondike joined as a Wave Cleaner and slowly rose through the ranks until he was their primary commander and even got the Five talking about extending him an offer to join and become the Sixth Lord. He would barter favors with everyone and go on expeditions around the Bay to collect enough resources. Soon he had all the Wave Cleaners under his fin and most of the town's citizens as well, even the Corals. This allowed him to usurp the Five by calling on favors on each of their direct underlings, and allowed him to take over the town. He has since ruled the Depths from the shadows, appearing only in meetings with individuals to trade resources and favors. The Wave Cleaners joined under his leadership and are now the de facto rulers of Planktown.
Thriving and Prosperous
The reformed Wave Cleaners dedicated themselves to redemption through helping the plankton farmers in their work and protecting the corals from outsiders and their pollution. As time passed, the town was able to turn its back completely to its dark past and start thriving and building again, soon leading to the establishment of the Dock, a surface wooden port for land and air-based species to enter the Depths from. They only did trade with some nearby settlements first, but after
First Contact, they were able to trade further out due to the availability of spaceships and faster air travel. With all this growth, Planktown is well on its way to growing into a city in its own right, though many outside of Planktown are still quite wary of
Sayyid Klondike and the Wave Cleaners due to their dark past and Sayyid's mysterious nature. Only time will tell how the fortunes of Planktown will change.
