Osgiliath
The town of Osgiliath is located at the southern edge of lake Pelennor in the center of the peninsula of Essos. The city grew around the castle that was created to defend the place where the Valangos river is most easily crossable. Later a bridge and small harbour were constructed and new walls erected to defend the sprawling settlement. The economy of the settlement is based around the large maroon fishes native to the lake, the wood that is cut from the large forests surrounding Osgiliath and its function as a thoroughfare from Valyria and Mosul to Varant.
The town houses a relatively large church which was originally dedicated to the Valyrian god-emperors. After the Valyrian empire was defeated a local cult remained worshipping Variss Valyris. The Varissian cult has transformed in the ages into a mythic cult worshiping the saintly figure of Variss, who according to local legend, fled to small island covered in mist at the center lake Pelennor after the Valyrian Conquest went awry. Here he supposedly slumbers until Essos is ready to be united by his godly rule again.
After the Order of Fire conquered most of western Essos, including Mosul, Osgiliath became a frontier town for the Zemerian Empire. Its best building masters have constructed a new, modest though effective, citadel at the other end of the bridge spanning the Valangos river. This is meant to defend the harbour from assault from the other side of the river and to strengthen the defences in the event of an attack from Mosul. The larger Zemerian presence has also caused a crackdown on the Varissian cult, sending some of its members fleeing into the woods.
