BIOGRAPHY
Otto Freising is an old bastard, according to those who serve with him. But a golden, old bastard. He was born in a village deep in the Dauer mountains in 1367. When he was just a young man his village was razed by an orc incursion. Otto survived as he was hunting in the hillside during the raid. Devastated Otto wandered until he reached a nearby Night's Watch troop driving back the orcs. He joined the hunt, but the orc chieftain who had led the raid eluded them. With nothing left he joined the
The Night's Watch. His skill at hunting earned him a place along the Ranger brigades.
In the following years he showed great resilience and toughness in the face of the Wilds. He was commended for his bravery against the necromancer threat in the
Northern Frontier and he was appointed First Ranger in 1396. Ever weary of the undead threat it was on Otto's command the Rangers started experimenting with daring counter-raids. At times these endeavours paid off and necromancers even were captured, at other times whole squads were needlessly lost. Otto personally interrogated the captured necromancers, and some say they still remember the horrifying screams coming from his dungeon.
The intelligence Otto uncovered this way provided a distinct advantage when the Night's Watch eventually marched on
Gorgorath in 1405. Otto led a band of Rangers personally to take out a summoning ring which was summoning artillery-like balls of coldfire to hurl at the Night's Watch forces. In the intense fighting Otto was maimed by the coldfire leading to a hefty scar on his right cheek.
After the war against Gorgorath Otto had to recover from his wounds and retired from the position of First Ranger. When he recovered he was offered the position of Chapter Master of the
Dreadfort by
Marcus Vardenfell. A position he happily accepted. From here he still works closely with the Northern Ranger brigades to guard against threats from the North and the
Talon Mountains.
Skills
Freising has seen a lot in his lifetime and doesn't scare easily. He is an adept with both bow and sword and like most rangers is a great survivalist. He knows how to hide when he needs to. He also has a knack for extracting information from people unwilling to give it.
PERSONALITY
Otto is a hard, but loyal bastard. He is a military man, who has nothing beyond the Night's Watch. He does have a fondness for nature, but doesn't show it. His experiences in life have made him cold-hearted and sometimes cruel. He doesn't do well in crowded cities and prefers the ease and hardship of the frontier.
Ideals
Otto is a man driven by hate against the Wild Things that would destroy his homeland. He is fiercely loyal to the Night's Watch. He also thoroughly supports the programmes initiated to settle the wild frontiers, believing this to be a strong weapon against the wilderness.
Bonds
Freising holds an allegiance to the Rangers within the Night's Watch, believing them to be the most effective tool to maintain order and stability.
Flaws
Otto can be cruel and miscounts lives for the greater good. He also delights in torturing his enemies. Apart from that he can't stand weakness in persons.
Diplomacy
Apart from the Rangers Otto isn't one to dabble in politics too much.
