History
500 years ago, local fisherman John Erbin rallied everyone in the area to his side and led an army against the Frenzied Folk, driving them from what would later become the Kingdom of Archren. After the war ended, the remaining army pledged their loyalty to John in return for his protection and wisdom. Thus the Kingdom was founded, and the city Cliffton was rebuilt as the capital. John's family was killed in the war, so he named his lieutenant Gustav as his heir. This lead John Erbin to being named the High King of all Archren, with Gustav Battlesworn as King under him. This tradition still persists to this day, with the current king being referred to as King Under John Erbin. Archren was peaceful and prosperous for many years afterwards, and it was not until the days of the fifth King, Cleft Battlesworn, that the kingdom began to expand its borders, conquering neighboring city states one by one. It was during this time that the Frenzied Folk dared to return. There were periodic attacks from that time until the days of King Orpheus the Conquerer, who subdued the last independent state west of the Backridge Mountains, when the attacks suddenly ceased. Since then, Archren has been at peace, slowly expanding its borders and sending travelers as far across the oceans as they dare to explore.
140 years ago, the lower half of the empire split off from the old kingdom following a dispute between the old king's sons, forming its own country of Ardent. Archren has never really accepted the loss, and continues to refer to the country as Lower Archren.
