Shalden

The Country to the east of the mountains, relatively isolated due to its geographical boundaries, developing its own culture and way of life. They usually keep to themselves, and are distrusting of outsiders. They have a better relationship with Ardent than Archren due to a few passes and a way around the lower slopes of the mountains, and Archren’s historical tendency to conquer. Referred to as the Shadowed Lands by the western states, due to being in the shadow of the mountains, and its ‘primitive, backwards ways.’

History

600 years ago there was no centralized government in Shalden. Instead, many tribes and warlords roamed the land, surviving as nomads and occasionally fighting and enslaving each other. One day a priestess of Vi-serin received a message from her deity, instructing her to remove the darkness from her people, bringing them together in the light. She went to her war chief, telling him of her vision. He did not desire a change in the status quo, but he did like the idea of becoming the supreme warlord of the land. He began to conquer neighboring tribes, ranging across the land in search of more victims, and enslaving everyone he could find. The priestess was not pleased at this interpretation of her goddess' command, and pleaded with her warlord to forge alliances with the other tribes instead. He declined, preferring to conquer his enemies instead, and eventually ordered her removed from his presence. The priestess received another message that evening, and the next day poisoned the warlord, assuming control over the tribe. With the priestess at the helm, the tribe began to forge alliances with other tribes, and freed the tribes they had already conquered, allowing them to become part of the alliance. Once the tribes were one large alliance, under her heading, the priestess followed another vision, leading her to a plain near the sea, where she ordered the construction of a permanent city. Harach, the capital of Shalden.
