Hephaistos was the only Olympian not graced with beauty, he was disfigured and tended to keep to himself in his forge. After birth his parents cast him out of heaven, disgusted by his physical failing in their eyes:

Personal history
After being cast out, he found his own way, not bearing grudges on his parents for being superficial. His years alone in his forge made him the best smith the world has ever seen. He crafted golden handmaiden to help out in his forge and he is credited with crafting Pandora. Eventhough the marriage was a mere arrangement to prevent war between the gods, the two of them have grown quite fond of each other and have settled into an open relatioship.

An arranged marriage to keep the other Olympians from fighting over her. Aphrodite is constantly infidel to the loving Hephaistos, who worshipps her and has made his peace with his wifes need for more than one love in her life. She does appreciate her husband, but it is in her nature to love more than one.
