"I entered through the short doorway into Oren's workshop. The interior smelled strongly of metal, and I could see dozens of tiny clockwork trinkets in various states of disrepair atop a large workbench in the center of the room. Oren turned to me, his pointed ears moving independently of each other as if his two sides had minds of their own. He asked me what I thought, to which I responded positively. He gave me a rather concerningly excited smile and pulled back a tall curtain in the back corner of the shop, revealing a massive mechanical man. His latest invention, he told me. I looked at the gnome, wondering how long ago he'd lost his mind." - An excerpt from "The Travels of Hafrick Moriarty"
Gnomes, sometimes referred to as
Elflings, were created by Kebis, Cadros, and Otia about 30 years after the creation of Elves. Each of them influenced the final product in different ways, leading to three distinct subraces with differing ideologies, behavior, and skills. Gnomes were the first to settle into large cities, which eventually would attract races from all across Mytkora into centralized locations of progress and politics.
Small and Elf-like
Gnomes resemble elves in many ways. They have identical pointed ears and delicate facial features with one exception being their often oversized noses. Like Elves, they also have spread out across Mytkora into a variety of subraces. Typically, an Elfling stands about 3 feet tall and weighs around 40 pounds. They have slender forms and are dexterous, and often have a cheerful, optimistic attitude about their days. They generally mature at the same rate as humans and are expected to settle into a more permanent lifestyle in their 40s or 50s. They typically live several centuries, with some reaching an impressive 500 years old.
Proficient Inventors
Gnomes are taught how to craft and create early in their lives. They excel in working with clockwork; their nimble fingers allow perfect placement of the hundreds of tiny gears that go into their various creations. In addition to being excellent tinkers, they often make high-quality craftsmen of varying sorts as well. Overall, they have all the tools and capabilities needed to form industrious and prospering cities.
Wise In A Worldly Way
Gnomes have never been overly religious, finding their joy and honor in productive lives surrounded by loved ones and bright thinkers. They show gratitude to the gods on particular holidays and will sometimes have a shrine in their shop or dwellings, but they are not devout followers of any one god. Most Elflings were unaffected by The Silence due to this disconnect, although nearly all are curious as to the nature of the pantheon's disappearance.
