Although the connection between Requiem and The Evergreen Realms had been severed long ago during the destruction that ensued after Styx's Awakening  the bridges between Requiem and The Underworld remained intact and even with their masters trapped in a catatonic slumber the Will-o-Wisps took it upon themselves to guide the souls of the dead into the Underworld. However, when The First Titan War  began, it also marked the first mortal war and the world experienced a mortality rate never before seen in ages past. The wisps simply could not keep up with the influx of souls and the excess spiritual energy those souls infused into the underworld seeped into the entranced body of the Grim Reaper finally awkening not only the Shepherd of the Dead, but the long forgotten Primordial of Death, Hades.
