Burntspire

Burntspire is a seven story stone tower located in the center of Keg Kuldron. It once acted as the home of Usminan royalty, and now as a historical monument and reminder of the Calashi victory over the Usminans during the Siege of Illeron. A ceremonial fire burns on the top floor of the tower at all times. Though numerous attempts to extinguish it have been made by rebels, these efforts have failed thus far.   The use of its original name, Illeron's Peak, is forbidden in the city.

Purpose / Function

Since the Siege of Illeron, the tower has taken on a new name - Burntspire. The husk of the once proud tower still stands in the center of the city as a reminder and warning to the Usminans who remain in the city. In addition, it acts as a propaganda tool for the other species that live in the city - inside are historical accounts of the war, the failures of the defending Usminan forces, and events since the occupation of the city.   Though humans are barred from entry into Burntspire, other species are welcome as visitors - though they are closely monitored during their visit. Calashi guides show guests around the tower and teach the history of the tower and the founding of Keg Kuldron. Due to its size, its lower levels are used as a repository of knowledge and a place of study, as well as a place to store forbidden art and culture.   The rear gate to Burntspire has taken on a new name as well - 'The Bloody Gate'. Executions of traitors, dissidents, and rebels were held behind the tower for years following the siege, and though the rate of these executions has slowed dramatically in recent years, the road has kept its new name.

Alterations

It is said that the upper floors of Burntspire are left as they were during the Long Shadows - burnt skeletons preserved with magic, and the ash protected from the elements. It is also said that numerous traps have been laid for those who might attempt to extinguish the flame at the top of the tower.

History

Burntspire was once known as Illeron's Peak, and acted as a palace and the center of Usminan royalty in the nation. Wealthy nobles would send their children to the capital for a chance to learn in the tower, and to make valuable social connections with the royal family. The immediate family of the king and queen ruled from its top floors, and emissaries and diplomats frequented the lower floors.
