Barovia Village
Barovia Village was a small town located in an open valley in the east of Barovia. Small in both land area and population, the village was not able to adequately protect itself from outside threats and became a hunting ground for some of Barovia's nastiest creatures. To the northwest of the village laid a sheer cliff, on which far above sat Castle Ravenloft. Strahd Von Zarovich himself was known to occasionally visit the village, though he usually did so in disguise. After the events of AoR 597, Barovia Village found itself mostly free from dark machinations, and was finally settled down in and ruled by Ismark Kolyana.
History
Barovia Village was a quiet and peaceful town, like most other settlements in Barovia before the arrival of the Von Zarovich family. Once Strahd as his forces arrived, the village easily bent to their will and was absorbed under the Zarovich banner. Though many now lived in fear, not much about Barovia Village changed over the early years. However, after the downfall of Strahd, and his subsequent rise to power as a Higher Vampire, Barovia Village began to greatly suffer, as did the rest of the valley. The town became the favourite hunting spot of many beasts and creatures, such as dire wolves, werewolves, hags and various types of undead. Because of this, the townsfolk rarely left their residences at night, too fearful of what the darkness would bring. In AoR 597 the Townmaster Kolyan Indrovich perished during a night of attacks upon his manor. His children Ismark and Ireena would successfully drive the beasts away, though knew they would return the following night. Seeking help, Ismark bargained for the services of an adventuring party, securing their talents in defending the manor. The following day, Ismark and Ireena would flee Barovia Village for Vallaki, leaving the town without leadership. 3 weeks later, Ismark would return to the village, though it would be without his sister. Strahd had been destroyed and Ismark would finally take up his title as Townmaster. In the years that followed, Barovia Village began to flourish. Under the rule of Ismark and without the threat of nightly deaths, Barovia began to trade with the surrounding settlements. This led to an influx of population and business opportunities. As of AoR 606, Barovia Village remains as Barovia's second largest town, behind only Vallaki.Places of Interest
- Blood of the Vine Tavern: This was the only bar in Barovia Village, and the only legitimate place that travelers would be able to stay the night. It was run by a short and pudgy man named Arvik. He worked for three Vistani owners, who would often take the coin made by the tavern each day, and return it to the Vistani camp at Tsar Pool.
- Bildrath's Mercantile: This was the only general shop in town, though it still saw little business due to Barovia Village's conditions. It was owned by an irritable fellow named Bildrath Cantemir and was protected by his large, yet simple minded, nephew; Perriwimple. In AoR 597, they were robbed by the Saviours of Barovia, who stole the shop's only wagon, in a bid to transport lumber to the Ivlis River.
- Father Donavich's Chapel: Near the outskirts of town sat a small ruined church, that even in it's dilapidated state, served as Barovia Village's place of worship. However, because of the intense fear of Strahd, only Father Donavich would practice within.
