Lord Kestrin Mithering
Lord Kestrin is an archfey who presides over the Court of the Wistful Glen in the Feywild.
At one point during The First Calm, he was cursed by a rival into the shape of a mortal fox on the material plane, and chased by a hunting party. He was rescued by Mair Barrowright, a storyteller who was unaware of his identity, and seeing him only as an injured animal, cared for him for over a month before he returned to his normal shape. He offered her a boon as thanks, disliking to be owing a debt and holding some geniune fondness for Mair, who he found cleverer and wittier than most mortals. However she had no great need of anything, and was well aware of the dangers inaccepting fey gifts, so she declined. So he gave her an acorn with a golden cap, and told her to bury it if she ever needed anything from him.
Mair never buried the acorn, but she wore it round her neck on a cord for the rest of her life, and bequeathed it to her daughter, who did the same, who did the same, until it ended up with Wren Barrowright, who used it to contact Lord Kestrin during the famine of the Nyridda Heartlands.
