Mathayas

Mathayas was Captain Elgar's second-in-command as first mate of the Jeweled Eye. While not the cleverest of the Argus Pirates, Mathayas was among the strongest and his loyalty to Captain Elgar is unyielding. He was also among the most honorable members of the crew, preferring to work with others by using the carrot rather than the stick. Nonetheless, he could and would resort to brute force when the situation requires it.

Conflicts with The Venture Boys

Following Vypra's death and Arachnor successfully capturing the Abyssal Shard, the Venture Boys had come to Captain Elgar's attention. Arachnor claimed the repairs to the Jeweled Eye would go much faster if they could acquire the Venture II's engine, which the captain delegated to Mathayas. Tracking the engine's signal and spying on the adventurers from above, he beamed down in front of them with Arachnor. After Arachnor confirmed these were the right people, Mathayas offered to purchase the engine and pay every member of the Venture II's crew their weight in gold. Unaware that Gibbidubbus was a person and not just an engine, he was perplexed at the party's quick and outright refusal of his offer. Mathayas warned them that their business was not concluded before signaling the Jeweled Eye to beam himself and Arachnor back.
Returning to the Jeweled Eye, Mathayas reported his failure to Captain Elgar. Displeased but not unsurprised, the Captain directed Mathayas to begin prepping more direct measures for seizing the engine.
Later, Mathayas was briefly spotted with Captain Elgar and Arachnor at a magic item auction. He left the event early and attacked the Venture II alongside Gyaos, interrogating the crew only to discover the magic engine was not on the ship. Upon their return, the rest of the Argus Pirates filled them in on their new alliance with the Vengeance Coven and the information the hags had provided about Gibby's powers.
Mathayas took his last stand leading the assault on the village of Mirebol. The Argus Pirates had come to wipe out the kuo-toa providing Gibbywith his power and Mathayas stayed to wipe out the shoreline village while the rest of the pirates moved inland. He put up a decent fight alongside his immolith demon minion, but the pair and their Gunkers were destroyed by the adventurers. Althea Filanes struck the final blow against Mathayas, immolating him with a mote of sacred flame.
