Arachnor was a drow who served as
the Jeweled Eye's science offer, creating the
Gunkers and other inventions at
Captain Elgar's behest. If you had to describe him in a single word, the best option would be "mad". It was never really clear exactly why he served his captain seeing as he appeared to care for no one but himself. Arachnor viewed most others around him as test subjects, showing not an ounce of concern for anyone else.
Stranded on Nexus
After
the Jeweled Eye was damaged battling the Venture, Arachnor was put in charge of damage assessment. His main concern was finding a new power source to get the ship's general functions back up and running, though he did manage to jury-rig their transporter beam in the meantime. They used that beam to send
Vypra to an island on the surface seeking a sufficient power source, though she failed to return.
Captain Elgar sent Arachnor to track down the next power source they located himself and with much grumbling Arachnor set off.
He snuck into a ruin invisibly, finding an
Abyssal Shard but no way to access it without attracting the attention of the
kobolds living in the structure. In the meantime, he began studying the facility's records to determine if and how the shard could suit his purposes. When
the Venture Boys showed up, he decided they'd be the distraction he needed to claim the shard. He entered the shard's chamber as the adventurers departed it but was noticed by
Althea Filanes, who turned to confront him. Arachnor responded by cracking open the shard and releasing several
demons from within, pointing out
Althea Filanes and claiming he'd brought her as a sacrifice for them.
While the demons engaged the adventurers, Arachnor used his magic to shrink the shard until it could fit in his bag of holding.
Guu the Slime, in the form of a giant toad, tried to prevent his escape but Arachnor turned to mist to escape and started running. Despite the additional efforts of
Althea and
N64 to stop him, he managed to flee the ruin with
Guu's summoned beast spirit in hot pursuit. The spirit managed to steal Arachnor's bag and he gave chase. When
Guu received an injury that made him lose focus on his magic, the beast disappeared and dropped Arachnor's bag into a tree.
As the demons were defeated, their bodies turned to smoke and returned to the shard. Arachnor was able to follow these smoke trails to his bag just as
Bakris Tarak, on his way to meet his friends, came across what looked like a drow man having trouble. He helped Arachnor retrieve his bag from the tree and Arachnor "thanked" him by giving him a potion of poison he told the half-orc sailor was a potion of healing. His mission complete, Arachnor contacted
the Jeweled Eye and was beamed back aboard, which did not go unnoticed by a confused
Bakris.
With the
Abyssal Shard now providing them with a power source, Arachnor moved onto repairing other parts of
the Jeweled Eye. He accompanied
Mathayas during the first mate's initial meeting with
the Venture Boys to point them out and ensure
Mathayas was talking to the right people. He made vague, laughing threats to the party when they rebuked
Mathayas' offer to buy their magic engine, being rebuked by
Mathayas several time for his rudeness. Smiling wickedly as
Mathayas informed the party this issue was not settled, the pair beamed away.
Arachnor happened the spy
the Venture Boys at a magic item swap meet while he was snooping around in the
Ethereal Plane. Much to his surprise, he wasn't the only one doing so. The hag
Broils Cooninn was also spying on them on behalf of fellow hag
Nightwhisper. The pair struck up a conversation and quickly surmised they could help each other eliminate a common enemy. Broils told Arachnor about
Gibbidubbus (having learned this from
Mathilda) and offered to eliminate
the Venture Boys. Arachnor wished her luck but was not surprised when she returned having failed. In the meantime, he and
Captain Elgar had already made arrangements to eliminate the source of
Gibbidubbus' power.
Arachnor participated in the attack against the
kuo-toa backed up by
Gunkers and his personal
phase spider minions. He was responsible for rooting the
kuo-toa out of their tunnels but was intercepted by a very angry
Gibby, who used his large godly form to pick up Arachnor and crush him to death.
