Favored:ank . You are a favored member of the House. If you are a scion of the House, you have pleased the patriarch sufficiently to gain his notice. If you are an agent or retainer of the House, your efforts to aid the House have gone well-noted.   • Lynchpin: Rank 3. You are given a position of some responsibility in the House's operations. If you are a scion of the House, the patriarch considers you one of the favored scions of the House, and consults with you on matters of House importance. If you are an agent or retainer, your contributions and skills in service of the House have won you a position of no small regard and respect in the patriarch's eyes - although that may earn you the jealousy of his blood kin who are less favored than you.   • Matriarch/Patriarch: Rank 10. You are the acknowledged and legal head of the household.       Interests   Trade & Interests: Shipping, cartography, exploration   Holdings: Waterdeep   History   Ethnicity: Chondathan   Founded: 1317 DR   Lords of Waterdeep   The Lords of Waterdeep are the ruling council of Waterdeep, forming the basis of its secretive oligarchy government. Established by the Old Mage of Waterdeep, Ahghairon in 1032 DR as an alternative to the rule of warlords (who tend to default to imperialistic and militaristic definitions of prosperity), the rule of the Lords is not just council-based, but also mostly anonymous. The council is made up of sixteen Lords, fifteen of whom are Masked Lords, and represented by a single Open Lord.

The Open Lord

The Open Lord's role is simple: he is the public face of the Lords of Waterdeep. He is not their leader - his is only voice among many - but it is the nature of the Open Lordship that he fulfills the function of being the publicly accountable and culpable person. In theory, his role is to be that person who can be held publicly accountable for the actions of the Lords, and whose existence prevents the rule of a wholly anonymous, faceless body of potential tyrants. The Open Lords holds a set of distinct legal powers granted him by his position.   The First Ambassador of Waterdeep: The Open Lord acts as the foremost diplomat for the city of Waterdeep, allowing congress with other nations and city-states who would never be comfortable dealing with a collection of faceless figures in diplomacy. As such, the Palace in the Castle Ward - a beautiful, accessible edifice - is given over to his purposes, where Waterdeep Castle upon the slopes of Mount Waterdeep remains the domain of the Masked Lords. Though he has extensive and comfortable suites within the Castle, it can't truly be called his "home," housing as it does extensive suites for visiting dignitaries, offices of the city bureaucracy and the like.   Commander of the Watch: The Open Lord also acts as the foremost authority for the city's Watch, although in practical terms, the actual running of the Watch is given over to the Captain of the Watch, who reports to the Open Lord directly.   Warden of the Guard: The Open Lord also acts as the Warden of the Guard, the supreme commander of Waterdeep's military forces, although as with the Watch, there is a more direct general who answers to Laerel.   Overmaster of the GUILDS: The Open Lord also holds the power of authority over the GUILDS of Waterdeep, with the power to override guild law. In a political world where much is done with subtle manipulations, semantic and creative interpretations of law and the like, the Open Lord is empowered to cut right through and issue absolute decrees.   Open Lord of Waterdeep   Piergeiron is the only openly-known Lord of Waterdeep, and speaks for all the Lords. As Overmaster of the GUILDS, he has clear authority to override Guild law, and his decree is the only absolute law in this city of interpretation and subtle evasion. As such, he is very safe from Waterdhavians - and his life is threatened by foreign powers, such as Amn, Calimshan, and Luskan, for the same reason: he is so above reproach, and so able in his administration and justice, that the City flourishes. Waterdhavians could not conceive of a better man to fill the offices Piergeiron discharges; those wishing the City ill want to remove him if at all possible.   Piergeiron speaks seldom, and slowly; as a result, he is sometimes snidely known as "the Thickskull," though never to his face. He is not stupid, but often pretends to be, to draw others out into verbal admissions they might otherwise not make. His grander nickname is due to the fact that his father Athar, "The Shining Knight," The Arm of Tyr, was a very famous paladin adventurer of the North.   Aleena Paladinstar   Daughter of the Open Lord   Though her father's position does not grant her any special title or privilege, Aleena has grown up in the middle of the palace's business and intrigues, and knows how such things work with a thoroughness that many magistrates and nobles frankly envy. She is away from the Palace at the moment, however, as she is apprenticed to the Blackstaff of Waterdeep.   Madeiron Sunderstone   Champion of the Open Lord   Madeiron is the appointed Champion of the Open Lord, an absurdly tall man closer to eight feet in height than seven. He is Piergeiron's personal bodyguard, remaining at the Open Lord's side in the Palace and outside the City. The man is a paladin of Tyr, and wields a Tyrite artifact called the Axe of Heavenly Fire in service to the Open Lord.   The Masked Lords   Fifteen in number, it is almost unheard of for more than seven of them to appear in a Lords' Court. The Masked Lords are not simply masked - their entire heads are hidden beneath the Lords' Helms, and their forms shrouded in the voluminous Lords' Vestments, deep purple sashed robes with heavy cloth gauntlets. It is known that the helms and robes are part of a potent illusion enchantment that hides the Lords from discovery: their voices are simultaneously projected loudly and given a somewhat-hollow baritone by the helms, and the robes practically shimmer with enchantments that serve to conceal any traits that might give away the identity of their wearer: build, movement patterns, sex and even height! Additionally, it is known that these helms (and possibly other regalia) not only protect the Lords' minds from being read or otherwise probed, but reveal to all the Lords in the vicinity any attempt to do so.   Though Piergeiron has a public appearance as being the leader among the Lords, he is in truth their voice. If anything, his word in the decisions of the Lords is given less credence than others, by the traditions of the Lords for one simple reason: as a public figure, he is a target of favor-currying, lobbying and other such attempts. The other Lords, in comparison, are anonymous and in a place to see and understand things that Piergeiron's privilege makes him blind to. Though city tales indicate that other Open Lords have taken this poorly, Piergeiron's humility has made him not just accepting of this dynamic, but supportive of it.   It is the Lords who make new laws, and change or abolish old ones. The Lords are also the heads of the Magistrates of Waterdeep, the body of black-robed legalists and judges who pass judgment on legal troubles. Magistrates are chosen from among the many clerks and other bureaucrats who help run the city, and are always chosen for their understanding of the law and demonstrated wisdom.

House Adarbrent Lineage

One of the youngest of Waterdeep's noble Houses, House Adarbrent is a marvel - in a port city full of merchants, the Adarbrent merchant fleet is second to none, and third only to the Watermen and Guard for sheer size. The Adarbrents are explorers, first and foremost, and theirs is not just wanderlust. Exploration burns in Adarbrent veins, and they have turned those fires into profit as well, offering not just mercantile shipping services but also having a hand in cartography and exploration (both a'sea and on land).
Adarbrent lineage
The family is led by Lord Royus, who first came to Waterdeep with his family when he was but three years of age. He watched as his father turned the Adarbrent Shipping Company into House Adarbrent within a single generation, a feat almost unheard of.

Faction

A house of wanderers and travelers, with interests in shipping, navigation, cartography, and exploration.

Overview

Explorers of every stripe, from those who lead deadly expeditions into uncharted lands to the master cartographers that record and reveal the findings of those expeditions, the Adarbrents dare where few do. While the Adarbrent love of exploration is first and foremost to them, their explorations and wealthy lifestyle is supported by their shipping business.

Goals and Philosophy

Unlike many Waterdhavian Houses, the Adarbrents' dreams take them beyond Waterdeep's walls - and indeed beyond the horizon. The Adarbrents favor those who dare much, especially if they do not wait for others' permission before undertaking their Feats of daring. The Adarbrents are goodly folk, though, and there is no room in the House for those whose daring is not tempered by compassion and mercy.

Activities

Perks   Scions and agents of House Adarbrent in good standing might receive the following benefits:   Living Quarters: Rank 1+. Those in good standing with the House are given quarters within the House's Waterdhavian villa appropriate to their role in the House.   Living Expenses/Salaries: Rank 1+. Those in good standing with the House also receive a stipend of 1gp plus 5sp per day per point of Rank. This is not actual cash, but simply familial credit towards payment of Lifestyle costs. This stacks with the same kind of familial credit received from the Waterdhavian Noble Background (see Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide).   Oft at Sea: Rank 2+. An Adarbrent of this renown has been at sea often enough to learn to make themselves useful while there, gaining a free Navigator's Tools or Vehicle (Sailing Ship) Tool Proficiency.   Business Opportunities: Rank 3+. Lynchpins to House Adarbrent's operations receive access to a variety of business opportunities within the House's money-making endeavors. This is handled as "Running a Business" in Downtime months. This does not incur a business expense, but if too many of the character rolls results that end in a loss of money, he can and will find his Rank in the House reduced.   Heir or Consort (Title): Rank 3+. The holder of one of the legal titles Heir of House and Consort of House, as recorded with the city of Waterdeep, is entitled to an additional 2gp per day in familial credit, per the "Living Expenses/Salaries" entry above. The heir is also accorded certain privileges within the legal system of Waterdeep, including the ability to speak on behalf of his House in some legal proceedings and the like.   Ship's Captain (Title): Rank 4+. Those with the inclination toward doing so may be made the captain of one of the Adarbrent SHIPS, as a test for future possible leadership within the House. They become the master of one of the Adarbrent SHIPS, with a full ship and crew ready and able to do their bidding - though they are not free to do as they like, for the captains answer to the House's Fleet Masters.   An Available Ship: Rank 5+. Those in very good standing with the House can call upon the services of one of the House's SHIPS. Ideally, a tenday is required before doing so, to make sure the ship isn't needed for any House business, but a ship can be called upon in emergency purposes within a number of hours equal to (11 - your Rank), though this does negatively impact the House's finances.   Fleet Master (Title): Rank 7+. There are four who hold this title in House Adarbrent, one for each of the Adarbrent fleets.   Wealth of the House: Rank 10. The patriarch of the House is in total control of the House's finances and various holdings, established by the laws of Waterdeep.

Members of the Family

Main Branch

Royus Adarbrent   Patriarch (Rank 10) • 46 years   Royus came to Waterdeep from Cormyr with his father many years ago. The Adarbrent Shipping Company was a success from the start, and Lord Royus now has the third largest fleet of SHIPS in Waterdeep (after the city guard and the Guild of Watermen).   Akaya Adarbrent   Consort (Rank 7) • 44 years   Akaya is the quiet strength behind her family. She occasionally accepts invitations to society events, but she is far likelier to be found in raucous revels with sailors and shipcaptains than she is to be among society matrons.   Alroy Adarbrent   Heir (Rank 5) • Firstborn • 23 years   While not the most hardy of seamen on board ship, Alroy Adarbrent is one of the best navigators in the city today.   Syllia Adarbrent   Secondborn (Rank 4) • 16 years   The only daughter of the Adarbrent family, Syllia is a true spitfire. She is her mother's daughter, as Royus often points out, with her willfulness, tenacity, and temper. She has been apprenticed to her Uncle Komiss, a captain in the fleet, for a year now, and her path in life is fairly clear. Though her mother has forced her to take a year off from shipboard life to prepare for her Coming Out, Syllia clearly resents it.   Ellis Adarbrent   Thirdborn (Rank 0) • 10 years   A quiet, bookish boy with a stutter that clearly embarrasses him terribly.   Shooral Adarbrent   Fleet Master (Exploration) • Patriarch's Brother (Rank x) • 41 years   The middle brother of Royus' siblings, Shooral is head of the exploration fleet. Since the death of Kraeis, the youngest of the Adarbrent sons, Shooral and Royus have not spoken - a simple feat, considering just how much time Shooral spends at sea.   Tyrannus Adarbrent   Patriarch's Nephew (Rank 0) • 23 years   The child of a star-crossed romance between Royus' younger brother Kraeis and the beautiful Kiarrah Zulpair.

Ruulado's Branch

Ruullado Adarbrent   Fleet Master (Merchant) • Patriarch's Uncle (Rank 9) • 57 years   The younger brother of Royus' father, Ruullado is the oldest and most experienced of the House Fleet Masters. The core Adarbrent shipping fleet is his to command, and has prospered under his careful hand. Ruullado is known to hate pirates.   Erestreen Moonstar   Patriarch's Aunt • House Moonstar • 51 years. Ruullado's sister and Lord Royus' aunt married into House Moonstar when she fell for the handsome Captain Gilderos Moonstar in 1323 DR.   Ondran Adarbrent   Fleet Master (Auxiliary) • Patriarch's Cousin (Rank x) • 30 years   One of Ruullado's sons, Ondran has made his name well and truly within the Adarbrent fleet, raised even above those many times his years to the position of Fleet Master. That's unsurprising to anyone who knows him, however - his men are fanatically loyal, and he is possessed of both charisma and cunning in equal measure.   Thalue Adarbrent   Ondran's Consort (Rank 2) • 27 years. Sweet natured, with an infectiously merry laugh, Thalue is one of Akaya's best friends, and the two are often seen together at social events. She is very protective of her children after the death of her youngest Spevran to an autumn cough. It was Thalue who insisted that she and Ondran take over the raising of Isbro and Vaer when their mother and father died two years ago.   Ondran II Adarbrent   Ondran's Firstborn Son (Rank 0) • 8 years. A loud and rambunctious boy with a fascination for swords of all kinds.   Arassa Adarbrent   Ondran's Secondborn Daughter (Rank 0) • 5 years. Her big brother's constant shadow and prone to throwing red-faced temper tantrums when she doesn't get her way.   Isbro Adarbrent   Ondran's Nephew (Rank 0) • 6 years. A quiet and very polite little boy, Isbro spends a lot of time being commanded about by Arassa, whom he seems to adore. He is very protective of his little brother Vaer, however.   Image:Vaer-adarbrent.jpg Vaer Adarbrent   Ondran's Nephew (Rank 0) • 3 years. A giggling little inquisitive toddler.   Image:Missyndra-adarbrent.jpg Missyndra Adarbrent   Patriarch's Cousin (Rank 1) • 25 years. Ruullado's youngest and named for his mother, Missyndra is just now easing herself back into the social scene of Waterdeep after an extended mourning period for her husband, Aykeros. By and large, she spends her days caring for her little ones, and her evenings with Akaya and Thalue.   Image:Ireen-meluera-adarbrent.jpg Ireen & Meluera Adarbrent   Missyndra's Firstborn Twin Daughters (Rank 0) • 6 years. Ireen and her twin Meluera are inseperable, and very attached to their mourning mama. By and large, they do not like to play with their rowdier cousins, although they have taken to Isbro's quieter company quite readily.   Image:Athue-adarbrent.jpg Athue Adarbrent   Missyndra's Thirdborn Son (Rank 0) • 2 years. Little Athue is a toddler.   The Cousins   Image:Chenta-adarbrent.jpg Chenta Adarbrent   Patriarch's Cousin (Rank x) • 75 years. The oldest of the Adarbrents, Chenta spends most of her time in her apartments and in the public areas of the Highsails House. She was among those who helped the Adarbrent Shipping Company prosper, and while she's always felt out of place among the nobles of society, it was her cunning that helped House Adarbrent accomplish ennoblement. But most memorable of all, Chenta was the captain of the vessel that found the old abandoned island that made the Adarbrent wealth possible, and she occasionally wears a string of rubies around her neck, given to her by Jarlinn in recognition of that fact.   Haless Adarbrent   Fleet Master (Merchant) • Patriarch's Cousin (Rank 8) • 51 years   The older cousin who grew up with Royus, Haless is well-loved by her fleet's captains - "Haless' Suitors," Royus like to teasingly call them, although there is probably some truth to the name. Haless has never married and seems disinclined to do so, though she never takes any man of the sea for her lover. "I don't ever want to either command him or fight him," she has said by way of explanation.   Image:Foman-adarbrent.jpg Foman Adarbrent   Patriarch's Cousin (Rank x) • 44 years. xxx   Image:Ziatha-adarbrent.jpg Ziatha Adarbrent   Foman's Firstborn Daughter (Rank x) • 24 years. xxx   Image:Lerra-adarbrent.jpg Lerra Adarbrent   Ziatha's Consort (Rank x) • 22 years. xxx   Image:Gend-adarbrent.jpg Gend Adarbrent   Foman's Secondborn Son (Rank x) • 15 years. xxx   Holdings   Resources Limit: If necessary, House Adarbrent could probably generate about 45,000 gp in liquid coin and valuables within a month, or about 15,000 gp within a tenday.   House Estate   South Copper Street, North Ward, Waterdeep   House Adarbrent's estate is the southernmost noble estate in Waterdeep, right at the very edge of the North Ward - a testament to the relative youth of the Adarbrent ennoblement. Nonetheless the Adarbrent rubies have purchases a great deal of luxury here, and it shows.   Rubycliff House: This three-story study in opulence was the first purchase the Adarbrents made, even before they were ennobled (but definitely as they had already begun trying to become so). Rubycliff's first floor is made up of primarily public rooms, with a small garden-facing suite for elderly House members for whom stairs are too difficult. The floor above has the various apartments and private living spaces of the main branch of the Adarbrent family, and the top floor is a series of lord-and-lady suites, nursery, and the like for the direct use of the Lord of the House's immediate family.   The Second House: Named so for its purchase right after the Adarbrent ennoblement, the three-story Second House was originally used as living quarters. Today is houses a handful of offices, primarily those of the Lord and the four Fleet Masters of the House, with a very public street-access facade. The ground floor houses the Lord's office and public meeting and waiting space for visitors, as well as the great Chart Room of House Adarbrent, and each floor above that is divided into two suites of offices for the Fleet Masters.   Wavewidow's Tower: A tall four-story tower constructed by Royus' mother when his father passed away, the Wavewidow's Tower sits in the middle of the fine Adarbrent gardens, surrounded by trees. Its ground floor is the family chapel to Valkur, with ample space for worship and small apartments for visiting priests who might call on the Adarbrents seeking shelter. Above that are two rooms of "mourning apartments" - suites of rooms that Adarbrent nobles traditionally retreat from the world into at the deaths of their spouses. Finally, the last floor stands quite tall by itself and is entirely glassed in, providing an excellent view of the surrounding city. It is just tall enough and angled just right to be able to see half of the harbor, and the spyglasses there can be used to get a closer look at SHIPS coming into port.   Highsails House: The four floors of the Highsails House provide living spaces for those Adarbrent nobles who do not dwell in the Rubycliff House proper. It has a single galleries great hall centrally located on the first floor, flanked by small apartment suites that are traditionally given over to newly-weds in the family, though one is currently resided in by Chenta, who has difficulty with stairs. Haless, Foman, and Foman's family live on the second floor, with Ondran's family on the third, and Ruulado, Missyndra, and Missyndra's family on the fourth. These upper floors are all divided into living spaces that are clearly noble in appointment if not necessarily size.   Retainers   Iolrath Marfander   Butler of Rubycliff House (Rank 5) • 64 years   Distinguished and unflappable, the half-elven Iolrath has been a servant for House Adarbrent for longer than they have been ennobled in Waterdeep. Iolrath maintains exquisite order in the house and ensures that everything that needs to go on behind the scenes does so outside of the view of the family he serves. For their part, the Adarbrents consider him not-quite-family - all of them have grown up with him, and many nights Lord Royus and he sit up after everyone else has gone to bed and the two talk, exchanging advice.   The Adarbrent Fleets   House Adarbrent maintains four distinct fleets, each headed up by its own Fleet Master, who answer only to the Patriarch of the House.   The First Mercantile Fleet: Ruullado Adarbrent, Fleet Master. The most profitable of the Adarbrent fleets, the First Mercentile deals with "heavy coin" projects - those projects requiring more than one ship, or singular SHIPS carrying very expensive cargos. The First Mercantile is made up of the finest SHIPS in the Adarbrent fleets: heavy, combat-capable, and fine to look at, as these are the SHIPS put to the service of royalty, nobility, and the very wealthiest of merchants.   The Second Mercantile Fleet: Haless Adarbrent, Fleet Master. While not as grand as the First Mercantile, the Second Mercantile Fleet is larger, almost by double the SHIPS. These SHIPS tend to operate singly or in small groups (usually no more than two or three). They are the faster merchant sloops, and those whose main security lies in how little they carry at once, how few of them there are at a single time, and how maneuverable each such ship is. Their cargos are usually smaller and worth less, though still profitable as each such ship will often carry the cargoes of multiple clients at once.   The Exploration Fleet: Shooral Adarbrent, Fleet Master. The Exploration Fleet was a dream of Royus', and it has been in existence for a little over a decade. Quite a small fleet, the SHIPS of the Exploration Fleet carry cartographers and explorers, rangers and survivalists who find new and unexplored areas to uncover, examine, and commit to chart and map. In recent years, the Exploration Fleet has been divided between in-land sites in the Moonshaes and some of the coastal expanses of Chult, but rumor says that the fleet has a new and exciting target.   The Auxiliary Fleet: Ondran Adarbrent, Fleet Master. Ondran's fleet's purpose is simple: they assist any of the other fleets as they are needed. Composed primarily of fighting SHIPS, the Auxiliary Fleet assigns its SHIPS in groups of paired SHIPS to particularly lucrative voyages with the Mercantile Fleets, or when the Exploration Fleet is going into particularly dangerous waters.   Rumors About House Adarbrent

Публичное заявление

House Adarbrent is involved in multiple shipping concerns, as well as a variety of cartographical investments; several of the House hold prominent positions in the Surveyors', Map, and Chartmakers' Guild (and to a lesser extent, the Master Mariners' Guild). As much as half of the House is away from Waterdeep at any one time, so many of its members are the masters of fleets or important mercantile or exploration vessels.   Quests undertaken by agents of House Adarbrent might include the following:
  • Accompany an Adarbrent ship on a journey through dangerous locations.
  • Find and recover a wrecked ship and her crew.
  • - Lead an expedition along a previously unknown route or a previous unknown location.

    История

1311 DR: Adarbrent Shipping Company comes to Waterdeep from Cormyr, when Royus is but 3 years of age.   1314 DR: In a joint expedition with House Zulpair, the Adarbrent Shipping Company discovers an island with an abandoned dwarven mine. The dwarves were slaughtered by monsters, but after a harrowing time securing the site, the Adarbrents and Zulpairs recovered an incredible wealth of rubies. On the return voyage, the Zulpair ships attempted to seize the Adarbrent gemstones and sink their ships, but the Adarbrents escaped and quickly returned to sanctuary in Waterdeep.   1315 DR: After an extensive investigation, House Zulpair is fined and the captain of its island expedition imprisoned for their attempted piracy of the Adarbrent ships. Jarlinn Adarbrent begs the Lords' Court to defer both punishments, insisting that the attacks by monsters and privation from lack of food and sleep had made everyone on edge. After some deliberation, the Lords agreed, and House Zulpair was cleared of punishment but not charges. The Adarbrent name is at the forefront of all of society's topic of talk for the next several years.   1317 DR: The Adarbrents are ennobled as a full Waterdhavian House.   1352 DR: A terrible storm does terrible damage to one of the Adarbrent fleets, killing Yhaeren, his wife Vondel, and Missyndra's husband Aykeros.
