Greyhawk
During the period of early migration, the Free City of Greyhawk was established as a trading post on the Selintan River just south of the Nyr Dyv which is effectively an inland sea. As the trading post prospered, first a village, then a keep sprung up around the trading center. The keep served as a base of operations for a local warlord who extracted taxes and occasionally raided a caravan to finance his expansion of Greyhawk. As his lineage continued, the wealth and size of Greyhawk also expanded. Around 375 CY, the mad mage Zagyg ruled over Greyhawk and it's considerable territory. Zagyg fueled money into Greyhawk and this is when it earned the moniker of "Gem of the Flanaess". He also built Castle Greyhawk that attracts adventurers from all corners of the continent. He eventually mysteriously vanished and by 498 CY the city proclaimed itself a free and independent city. Immense wealth then began to flow into the city and artisans, mercenaries, mages, and nobles all flocked to the city and developed it into the magnificent city that it is today.
